    • An automatic cutting-tip replacing apparatus in a machine tool, having means for firmly clamping, at the required position, a cutting-tip which is detachably attached to the predetermined position of a tool holder or a cutting tool shunk and for removing the cutting-tip therefrom, and also having means for feeding a spare tip to said required position, said apparatus being mounted on a rotary table rotating between the tipreplacing position and the awaiting position. This arrangement eliminates the prior need of replacing the entire tool holder and greatly reduces the size of the tool replacing device thereby making both the designing of the apparatus and the attachment of the apparatus to the machine easy, providing an efficient operation as well as greatly saving time and labor.

    • A spindle unit comprises a tool-cramping device to make more rigid a main spindle (2) of a machine tool and allow it to operate at high speeds. The main spindle (2) is a solid shaft of a very rigid material such as cemented carbide and is supported rotatably in a spindle head (1) by bearings (3) which generate only low heat. A tool-cramping device includes an adapter (8) attached to a front end of the main spindle (2), and a tool holder (12) carrying a rotary tool (10), with one of the adapter (8) and the tool holder (12) comprising a short columnar lug (9), and the other comprising a cylindrical bore which can be shrink-fitted tightly onto the lug (9). The member having the bore (13) therein is made of a material of a thermal expansion coefficient higher than that from which the other member is made. The tool-cramping device further comprises means for heating (14) and means for cooling (15) the member (12) having the bore (13) therein.

    • A toolholder and insert cartridge are disclosed in which an insert cartridge holds multiple, similarly-shaped inserts in a face-to-face relation in a storage chamber. The insert cartridge has means thereon for dispensing individual inserts one at a time and can be adapted to be held and moved by a robotic arm or a reciprocal moving holder. A toolholder having an insert pocket with a movable insert seat therein is utilized with the insert cartridge. A reciprocably movable drawbar moves the insert seat in the toolholder pocket back and forth so as to clamp and unclamp a cutting insert. When it is signaled to change the insert, the drawbar moves the insert seat out of the insert pocket, thereby unclamping the insert. The insert is then removed from the insert seat and the insert storage cartridge is positioned in proper alignment with the toolholder. The cartridge and toolholder are then engaged so that the insert seat engages the dispensing means on the cartridge unit. The drawbar is then actuated so that the insert seat is moved inwardly into the pocket of the toolholder, thereby taking an insert from the storage chamber of the insert cartridge and clamping it in the insert pocket of the toolholder. The toolholder and the insert cartridge are thereby disengaged and the robotic arm on the insert cartridge may move it back to storage position so that machining may continue.
