    • A solar water heating system including a solar collector panel and a combination storage tank and heat exchanger unit for receiving liquid heated in the solar collector panel. The collector panel includes a collector plate made from a pair of steel plates welded together and having a heat absorbing porcelain glass coating on the surface thereof which is exposed to the suns rays. The heat exchanger unit is comprised of a storage tank containing the water to be heated and a plurality of vertically extending heat exchange tubes mounted inside and sealed from the water in the storage tank. The liquid heated in the collector plate is circulated by a pump unit through a first conduit connected between the bottom of the heat exchange tubes and the inlet of the collector plate and through a second conduit from the outlet of the collector plate to the top of the heat exchange tubes. An air transfer conduit is connected in parallel flow relationship with the second conduit to facilitate complete and rapid drainage of the collector plate and exposed piping when the circulation pump is shut off.

    • A molded plastic base has longitudinally extended channels, with the channel walls being relieved at laterally spaced locations to define closely spaced posts which support a transparent cover. A flat metal heat absorbing plate is provided just below the cover, and has holes for loosely receiving the posts. A corrugated plate is welded to the underside of the heat absorbing plate to define fluid passageways, which passageways are located in the channels of the base. The plate assembly is supported at one end of the base by inlet and outlet pipes for circulation fluid to be heated, and at the opposite end the plate assembly is supported by a gas adsorbing device which operates from the expansion and contraction of the plate assembly in order to preserve the vacuum in the area surrounding the heat absorbing plate.

    • The specification discloses a solar energy collector having a manifold with a manifold supply tube and a manifold return tube disposed therein. Fluid is supplied to the apparatus through the manifold supply tube and is received from the apparatus through the manifold return tube. A plurality of spaced apart riser U-tubes extend away and upwardly from the manifold with one end of the U-tube being in fluid communication with the manifold supply tube and the other end of the U-tube being in fluid communication with the manifold return tube. Dimples are formed in spaced apart positions along the supply tube and an orifice is formed in the center of the dimple. The U-tube is connected to the supply tube at the dimple, covering the orifice so that the orifice meters the fluid flow to the U-tube. A solar energy absorber tube encompasses each of the U-tubes.

    • Apparatus for converting solar energy to useful energy principally for home use. The apparatus provides a complete system for receiving solar energy over a large area, e.g. 1,000 square feet; concentrating the energy; and directing the energy toward a target of a few square feet at an extremely high temperature. The receiving, concentrating and transmitting apparatus consists of an array of collectors provided with mechanisms for tracking the sun. The collectors include a system of reflectors and/or lenses to first concentrate and then direct the energy toward the target.The system further includes a substantial storage chamber with means for circulating a fluid between the target and the storage chamber to transfer heat from the target to the storage chamber. The system further includes means for transferring the heat from the target and/or storage system to a heat engine and electrical generator combination to create power for use on demand. Heat transferred to the engine cooling fluid is used for space heating and air conditioning.
