    • A bias control circuit for a radio-frequency power amplifier which performs linear power amplification of an intermittent radio-frequency signal. The control circuit includes a bias voltage setting circuit for supplying a bias voltage of a predetermined value to a power amplifying element during a time period in which substantially none of the radio-frequency signal is supplied to the power amplifying element, and for setting the idle current of the power amplifying element to a predetermined value. The control circuit further includes a sample and hold circuit for sampling and holding the bias voltage during the time period in which substantially none of the radio-frequency signal is supplied to the power amplifying element. The output voltage of the sample and hold circuit is supplied as a bias voltage to the power amplifying element during the subsequent time period of supply of the radio-frequency signal to the power amplifying element, whereby the idle current of the power amplifying element is stabilized despite any temperature fluctuation.

Using closed-loop control, the bias controller sets the bias voltage to whatever value is needed despite circuit component variations and temperature effects. Operation of the bias controller complements dynamic bias voltage adjustment in advance of transmit operations, such as in advance of a transmit burst. In a first state, where the power amplifier is in a quiescent condition, the bias controller adjusts bias voltage to set the desired quiescent current by detecting the supply current into the power amplifier. The bias controller then transitions to a second state, where it maintains the adjusted bias voltage irrespective of amplifier supply current. Despite its ability to sense supply current into the power amplifier, the bias controller's configurations avoid dissipative current sensing during normal operation of the power amplifier.

    • The present invention provides a method and apparatus for auto-biasing an amplifier. The auto-bias system of the present invention has an auto-bias feedback loop that adjusts the bias condition of an amplifier to a wanted state between transmission periods. The system monitors a physical quantity indicative of the operating state of the amplifier and controls the amplifier bias so as to control the amplifier operating point sufficiently to compensate for variations in amplifier electrical characteristics, amplifier load, amplifier temperature, and input signals. The system further adjusts the amplifier operating point based on the modulation scheme used to modulate information included in an input signal provided to amplifier, thereby allowing the amplifier to operate in any one of multiple signal modulation systems.
