    • A simulated wood burning sound system, including an electronic circuit that provides the "crackle" sound of a combustible wood fire. The system includes a programmed electronic sound chip that stores a recorded memory of wood burning sound. A volume control potentiometer adjusts the audio volume of the sound being transmitted through a speaker and is adjustable to simulate a range of sound effects from a quite fire to a roaring fire. A temperature sensitive sensor for detecting heat or a light sensitive sensor controls automatic startup and shutdown. In addition, a power switch has a permanent "on" position for testing the unit and for applications, such as a simulated fire, where a sensor is not applicable. A plastic housing protects the circuitry and provides a mounting base.

In this manner, from eighteen (18) digitally prerecorded sounds of the preferred embodiment ninety (90) individually selectable and/or combinable sounds are made available. In either embodiment, natural or other sounds may be stored in loop or sound bite format in either or both of the internal and external memories. In a further sound relaxation and sleep-inducing embodiment, first and second preselected sound patterns selected respectively to mask sound and soothe the listener and to induce a state of deep relaxation that helps the listener to fall asleep may be selected by depressing combination mode select and sequential sound selector switches. In alarm mode, sound select and alarm check buttons respectively allow any sound of the library of prerecorded sounds (sound card or internal, single or mixed) to be selected as the alarm wake-up sound and one-touch alarm status display and audible alarm replay of any sound selected at wake-up volume in sound wake-up mode.

    • An electrical noise generation circuit for use in conjunction with an electro-acoustic transducer to simulate the sound of burning wood. A small loudspeaker enclosure accommodates a battery driven circuit in which a wideband electrical noise signal is produced by current flow through a zener diode. The noise signal is amplified by a frequency selective amplifier designed to have a high gain at a selected frequency in the audio frequency range, and rectified to produce unipolar signals which have randomly variable amplitudes and occur at random intervals. The unipolar signals are amplified by an amplifier having an adjustable input threshold bias. By adjustment of the bias level, output signals from the amplifier, and sounds produced by the loudspeaker, may be varied from intermittent individual pulses to rapid "bursts" of pulses. Operation of the circuit in proximity to an artificial log fire produces a surprisingly realistic audible simulation of wood burning sounds.
