    • An electronic encoder is driven by the cross shaft in the grinder that moves the grinder. The encoder includes a rotary disc constantly driven by the cross shaft, forwardly and rearwardly. Associated with the encoder is an electronic counter in which counting functions are performed in response to the rotation of the disc. An electrical circuit incorporates the encoder and counter, and the electronic circuits of the latter, and includes terminals in common with the encoder and counter. Control signals are entered so that functions are performed according to the position of the grinding wheel, and to move the grinding wheel. The encoder is mechanically connected with the cross shaft in an add-on arrangement. A hydraulic motor drives the cross shaft through a motion transmitting component that includes a hydraulic unit and a mechanical unit in tandem. The entire apparatus is retrofitted, and has mechanical driving connection with the grinder only through the cross shaft. The apparatus is made up of separate units each of which can be packed in an individual package.

    • A micromanipulator system for precisely positioning an object in an xz plane and then grossly moving the object in the y direction into a hole z is disclosed. The micromanipulator system includes a base and a platform mounted to the base having five different degrees of movement (in the x direction, y direction, z direction, about the x axis, and about the z axis). Suitable moving mechanisms are provided for reversibly moving the platform in the five degrees of movement. Four of the degrees of movement being for fine or precise positioning of the platform and the fifth degree of movement in the y direction being a coarse positioning movement. A device for holding the obejct to the platform is then provided such that after precisely positioning the platform in the xz plane, the object is coarsely moved in the y direction toward the hole. Preferably, a device is provided for detecting an opposition force to the coarse movement of the object in the y direction. In addition, measuring devices are provided for measuring movements of the platform in each of the five degrees of movement. Preferably, the moving mechanisms are linear actuators, two of which serve for axles for rotation of the platform about the x and z axes. A suitable rolling friction system is provided with the linear actuators which includes a ball in a rounded trough. The object is inserted in the hole by a suitable search pattern after a robot initially locates the micromanipulator adjacent the hole.

    • The controller attaches to a milling machine such as the well-known Bridgeport miller so as to adapt the machine to programmed automatic operation. Controls are associated with all axes of operation, however, the control is described herein with regard to X and Y axis control. A control panel for all operations is physically mounted in association with the X axis table. The basic components of the system include power motors for respectively controlling lead screws associated with X and Y axis control, electrical relays which in turn control the power motors, optical encoders which essentially read lead screw rotation, and a microprocessor. The electrical relays are used to start, stop, and set the directional rotation of the power motors upon commands from the microprocessor. The microprocessor has two basic modes of operation including a program mode in which the steps performed by the machinist are recorded for subsequent repeatability. The other mode is a run mode during which the microprocessor progresses through the previously established program from start to finish to thus reproduce a part.

    • A retrofit auto-indexing system for a turret punch press is described in which a predetermined location is provided to which both the upper and lower turrets of a non-indexing turret punch press are rotated. Upper and lower punching tools are mounted respectively in the upper and lower turrets in such a manner so as to be rotated simultaneously, using a single servomotor, to a desired angle. The auto-indexing system is controlled using a microcomputer which is connected to receive the numerical control programmed data, determine whether the code it is receiving relates to the auto-indexing function and, when it does, institute the instructed auto-indexing function. Otherwise, the microcomputer passes the numerical control programmed data directly to a minicomputer which operates the turret punch press in a known manner.

    • The cabinet of the numerical control device contains a memory, a frequency changer, an amplifier and two correcting units. A programing station with keyboard and mounted on the cabinet enables programing the memory. The control device further comprises an encoder and a DC motor. It shall be associated with a lathe mechanically controlled by cams. The encoder records the successive positions of the camshaft and transmits these informations to the memory. In accordance with these informations the latter transmits mandatory instructions to the frequency changer and to the amplifier which modify the motor speeds and, consequently, those of the spindle and of the camshaft, to an extent dictated to the memory by the keyboard. At the beginning of particular machining steps the memory can activate the correcting units thus permitting to modify the instructions of the memory in order to find out the optimal speeds after some tests.
