    • A horizontal trough accommodates a body of water and has two transversely spaced lateral sides one of which is provided with an edge. A substantially vertical discharge chute has an upper endportion into which slag and other combustion residue from a furnace is permitted to enter and a lower endportion with an outlet through which the residue enters into the trough. The lower endportion is bounded by two transversely spaced walls one of which is closer to the first edge and the other of which is closer to the second edge of the trough, with the other wall being vertically movable with reference to the stationary upper portion of the chute. A pusher pushes residue out of the trough, beneath the vertically movable wall and over the free edge of the trough.

    • An apparatus and method for dewatering combined ash or other combustion related products. The apparatus aspects of the invention consist of a quench bath having a curved portion containing a plunger adapted to push combustion materials contained in the quench bath up an inclined trough. A vibrator is mounted below a portion of the inclined trough located above the waterline in the quench bath. As a result, material moved up the inclined portion is subject to vibration and compaction resulting in a substantial dewatering of the combustion material. The method of the present invention provides for the steps of quenching, moving and vibrating combustion by-products to obtain a dewatered material having reduced free water run-off.

    • The arrangement for treating combustion residues of a combustion installation comprises an ash discharger into which opens a fall shaft, into which the solid combustion residues fall from a furnace grate.     • An apparatus for discharging cinders from an incinerator has an upwardly open intake pit having horizontally spaced front and rear walls. A water-filled trough is provided below this intake pit and has an upwardly concave floor and defines an upwardly extending outlet for cinders which have been quenched after they have dropped down in the pit into the water in the trough. A stepped plunger has a front face slidable in an arcuate path along the floor of the trough between a retracted position relatively close to the front wall defining the pit and an advanced position relatively far from the front wall. This plunger also has an upper surface on which is provided a step having a face which lies in back of the front wall in the retracted position of the plunger and between the walls in the advanced position. Thus as the plunger is advanced from the retracted to the advanced position the step pushes large objects against the rear wall of the pit and compresses these large objects. In addition, this step is inclined so as to exert a downward component of force on material in the pit and press it against the floor of the trough.
