    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accomplish both prevention of disengagement of a shoe-hold spring from a shoe-hold apparatus and improvement of the assemblability of the shoe-hold apparatus.
      SOLUTION: A shoe-hold pin has a small diameter shaft portion and a large diameter shaft portion. One end opened slots are formed at the pair of arm pieces of the U-shaped shoe-hold spring, and the slots are such that the small diameter shaft portion of the shoe-hold pin is passable therethrough and the large diameter shaft portion thereof is non-passable. A pin-insertion hole, which is continuous to the slot of the arm piece on the side of a web and stores the large diameter shaft portion therein, is formed in the arm piece on the side of the web and restricts the shoe-hold spring from disengaging therefrom when the large diameter shaft portion of the shoe-hold pin is stored in the pin-insertion hole.

    • A drum brake assembly (10) including a rotatable drum having a radially inner braking surface and a brake shoe (11) of single piece construction and of generally circular form mounted within the drum against a backing plate (12). The brake shoe (11) has a radially outer face (18) and a friction lining (16,17) mounted thereon in facing relationship to the radially inner braking surface. Actuating means (13) having actuated brake on and released brake off conditions and being operable in the actuated condition to diametrically expand the brake shoe (11) is provided. Positioning means (21) are also provided for positioning the brake shoe (11) within the drum when the actuating means (13) is in the brake off condition to provide for complete clearance between the outer face (18) of the friction lining (16, 17) and the inner braking surface of the drum. A grinding jig for grinding friction lining is also provided and a brake assembly having connecting means for connecting the brake shoe to the backing plate.

    • The present invention is a drum brake shoe assembly (8) having an improved support structure (31) which limits the lateral travel of the leading brake shoe (13), to thereby reduce or eliminate audible impacts between the brake shoe (13) and the backing plate (10) of the drum brake assembly. In accordance with the invention, two or more spaced apart hold down devices (30, 31) are provided on the leading brake shoe (13) while a single hold down device (30) is used on the trailing brake shoe (12). Each of the hold down device includes a hold down pin (32) connected at a first end (38) to the backing plate (10) of the drum brake assembly. The second end (40) of each hold down pin (32) extends through an opening (36) in the web (18) of the brake shoe (14). Springs such as coils springs (42) or the like are disposed between the second ends of the hold down pins (32) and the brake shoe web (18) for urging the brake shoe (14) against the backing plate (10).

    • Backing plates are normally bolted to wheel gear housings and brake shoes are normally biased against such backing plates. Hydraulic or pneumatic lines normally proceed externally of the housing and over the backing plate to connect with a wheel cylinder which motivates the brake shoes. Such hydraulic lines can be easily damaged. A wheel brake arrangement (10) is disclosed which eliminates external hydraulic or pneumatic lines and eliminates such a backing plate. At least one conduit (33) is formed within a housing (12). The conduit (33) is connected directly to a wheel cylinder (28). The wheel cylinder (28) is mounted to one end (24) of the housing (12). A biasing structure (50) can serve for biasing a brake shoe (26) into contacting relation with one end (24) of the housing (12). A piloting arrangement (49) can serve for properly aligning the wheel cylinder (28) to motivate the brake shoe (26) and to receive pressurized fluid from the conduit (33).
