    • Pumps and pumping methods wherein rotators having radial extent cause propulsion of the pumped fluid and wherein the rotators are outwardly convergent one toward another whereby the product, fluid volume times fluid velocity, at each radial location is substantially constant. The pumps are capable of use as heart pumps, blood pumps, and as pumps to pump all types of natural or artificial biological fluids in connnection with the maintenance of life and/or biological functions in a human body, animal body, or any other pumping function. The pumps can be used to replace or assist the pumping functions of the heart in vivo or ex vivo. The pumps can be used to pump biological fluids in vitro or in any in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro combination. The pumps may be also used to pump natural or artificial biological fluids as well as nonbiological fluids. The nonbiological fluids so pumped may be pumped in connection with biological or nonbiological activities, functions, and/or applications.

    • A turbogenerator/motor controller with a microprocessor based inverter having multiple modes of operation. To start the turbine, the inverter connects to and supplies fixed current, variable voltage, variable frequency, AC power to the permanent magnet turbogenerator/motor, driving the permanent magnet turbogenerator/motor as a motor to accelerate the gas turbine. During this acceleration, spark and fuel are introduced in the correct sequence, and self-sustaining gas turbine operating conditions are reached. The inverter is then disconnected from the permanent magnet turbogenerator/motor, reconfigured to a controlled frequency mode, and then either supplies regulated three phase voltage to a stand alone load or phase locks to the utility, or to other like controllers, to operate as a supplement to the utility. In this mode of operation, the power for the inverter is derived from the permanent magnet turbogenerator/motor via high frequency rectifier bridges. The microprocessor monitors turbine conditions and controls fuel flow to the gas turbine combustor. An energy storage and discharge system including an ancillary electric storage device, such as a battery, can be connected to the generator controller through control electronics. Electrical energy can flow from the ancillary electric storage device to the turbogenerator controller during start up and increasing load and vice versa during self-sustained operation of the turbogenerator. When utility power is unavailable, the ancillary electric storage device can provide the power required to start the turbogenerator. When a load transient occurs, the gas turbine engine and the ancillary electric storage device can provide the power required to successfully meet the transient.

    • In an integrated turbogenerator system having an air intake for a compressor to supply combustion air to a combustor, an electric brake device such as a resistor is connected to the electrical power output of the turbogenerator and is situated in the air intake to be cooled by the stream of combustion air flowing into the intake. When load transients require unloading excess electrical power produced by the turbogenerator, the brake resistor is supplied with at least part of the excess electrical power to create heat energy and thereby heat the in-flowing combustion air to lower the combustor efficiency, turbogenerator power produced, and excess electric power to be unloaded. An algorithm may be provided for controlling the turbogenerator speed deceleration rate to maintain the brake resistor at or near a physical temperature limit.

    • Pumps wherein smooth surfaced rotators cause propulsion of a delicate fluid without significant damage to the fluid. The pumps may be used as heart pumps, blood pumps, and pumps for all types of fluids in connection with the maintenance of life or biological functions in a human or animal subject in many in vivo, ex vivo, or in vitro applications, or for any other application requiring gentle handling. The pumps may be actuated by internal or external electric motors, and the rotators may be configured to converge mutually as an inverse function of distance from the axis of the rotators. The rotators may be connected together, by pins passing through the fluid passages, for mounting and driving as a unit, or may be mounted and driven independently to further eliminate the possibility of damage to the fluid by rotator-connection members.
