    • A shake-prevention mechanism is positioned on a support unit that supports the shake-prevention optical system. A single flexible printed circuit board having connection ends that connect to the various electrical connections is used as the wiring device to interconnect to the various electrical connections in the mechanism in addition to connecting the mechanism to external devices. The connection ends of the flexible printed circuit board are mounted to pinch and/or surround the support unit containing the drive mechanism from the front and back in the direction of the optical axis. Additionally, a base plate and a cover unit are positioned to have a spacing in between, together forming a support unit for supporting a shake-prevention optical system that is part of the shooting lens system. One photo-interrupter is fixed to the base plate that supports the motor, while another photo-interrupter is fixed to the cover unit that presses the motor and is a unit separate from the base plate. A shutter unit is integrated with a lens group with a smaller diameter than the anti-vibration lens group. The shutter wiring board and the anti-vibration wiring board are connected electrically in a surface substantially perpendicular to the optical axis formed in the vicinity of a lens group of the shutter unit.

    • A camera having improvements in (a) the placement of anti-vibration sensors, (b) the connection between components of an anti-vibration mechanism, (c) the connection between the anti-vibration mechanism and external testing devices and (d) the connection of the camera to a tripod. The camera body has first and second ends and a photographic lens which is positioned on the camera body between the first end and the second end. A battery compartment, first and second anti-vibrations sensors and a main capacitor are all positioned in the first end of the camera body. The first anti-vibration sensor is positioned between the battery compartment and the photographic lens. The first and second anti-vibration sensors reside on the same sensor card and the sensor card has a connector mounted thereon. An anti-vibration CPU resides on a separate, flexible printed circuit card and is connected to the anti-vibration sensors by inserting a potion of the flexible printed circuit card into the connector on the sensor card. Communication terminals are provided inside the camera for allowing external testing equipment to communicate with the anti-vibration sensors and the anti-vibration CPU. Moreover, the shutter release button is on the top of the camera and a tripod is fixed to the bosom of the camera so that depression forces from the pressing of the release switch are transferred to the tripod and do not cause the camera to vibrate.

    • An image deflection preventing device for a camera, such as a still camera which is used to drive a deflection preventing optical system in accordance with readings from angular velocity sensors and other circuitry. Moreover, an exposure mode selection device is included to select strobe photography according to the focusing distance from a distance measuring unit maintained in the camera to a subject to be photographed. The selection device can select strobe photography when the focusing distance is closer than a predetermined distance or when photographic magnification from a focal length detection unit to a subject to be photographed is greater than a predetermined value. The selection of strobe photography is done using results from a photometric unit in conjunction with the determination of a brightness level. In particular, if a given brightness level is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, strobe photography is selected, otherwise, exterior light photography is selected. The brightness level for selection of strobe photography is typically higher at closer distances, longer focal lengths, or larger photographic magnifications.

    • A vibration compensation mode selection apparatus and associated visual display for a camera which allows a photographer to enable or disable a vibration compensation unit while receiving visual feedback regarding the operation state of the vibration compensation unit and information regarding the vibrations detected within the camera. A vibration detection unit is provided to output a signal indicating the amount and direction of vibrations experienced by the camera. A vibration compensation unit drives the vibration compensation lens perpendicular to the optical axis of a photographic lens system to correct for the vibrations detected by the vibration detection unit. A button is provided on the front face of the camera to enable the photographer to disable the vibration compensation unit by pressing the button. A display unit is provided to indicate to the photographer whether the vibration compensation system has been enabled or disabled. For example, the display unit can be configured to flash at a high frequency when the vibration compensation unit has been disabled. Further, the display unit can be configured to provide information regarding the severity of the vibrations detected within the camera. Specifically, the display unit can be configured to steadily illuminate to indicate vibrations which can be corrected by the vibration compensation system, and at a slow rate to indicate vibrations which are outside the correctable range of the vibration compensation unit. The display unit can either be provided within the viewfinder or on the body of the camera in a location easily visible by the photographer.

    • A zoom lens barrel containing a support member for supporting a vibration compensation lens and a vibration compensation drive unit thereof. The support member is held inside the lens barrel so that it is moveable in the direction of the optical axis. The support member is formed from a mold, with the molded support member including multiple gear shafts and cam followers. The multiple gear shafts are positioned on the molded support member in a row and in a direction which is perpendicular to the optical axis. The cam followers are positioned on the support member in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis. The multiple shafts are positioned on the support member at different angles from the cam followers so that the respective die extraction angles are different. The multiple gear shafts support a gear train which is positioned near an interior surface of the lens barrel. A flexible printed circuit board inside the lens barrel extends from a control circuit positioned outside of the lens barrel to various electrical components inside the lens barrel. A support member is also provided having multiple arms that extend away from the support member and a cover plate for covering the vibration compensation lens drive unit.

    • A camera is provided which has a vibration detection unit that detects vibration, a photographic focal length detection unit which detects the focal length of the photographic optical system, and a distance-measurement unit that measures the distance to the object being photographed. The vibration compensation device employs drive motors as a vibration compensation unit. The drive motors have a start up time which is at least as fast as the acceleration of a vibration having roughly a sine wave shape with a frequency of 10 Hz and a maximum velocity of 7.5 mm/sec. Such a motor is able to reach the maximum velocity of the vibration in under 25 ms. Additionally, a correct compensating coefficient calculation unit is provided which, from the output of the photographic focal length detection unit and the output of the distance-measurement unit, calculates a correct compensation coefficient for determining how much to change the optical axis of the photographic optical system relative to the output of the vibration detection unit. The vibration compensation device compensates for vibrations by driving the motor to change the optical axis of the photographic optical system of the camera in response to the compensation coefficient and the output of the vibration detection unit.

    • A camera, which detects and compensates for vibrations affecting the camera, has improved positioning of vibration detection sensors. The camera includes a camera body having an outer cover and a lens barrel. The lens barrel has a substantially cylindrical outer portion and is positioned on the camera body to divide the camera body into a first portion and a second portion with the lens barrel therebetween. A rangefinding unit is positioned in the camera body and is covered by the outer cover of the camera body. The rangefinding unit has a surface which has a portion opposing the circumference of the outer portion of the lens barrel. A first space exists in the first portion of the camera body and has borders defined by the circumference of the outer portion of the lens barrel, the surface of the rangefinding unit and the outer cover of the camera body. A flash generation device is positioned in the second portion of the camera body and a vibration detection sensor positioned in the first space. In this manner, space inside the camera is efficiently utilized and the amount of noise affecting the vibration detection sensor is reduced.
