    • The invention provides a metathetic process of the type M'X + M"Y = M'Y + M"X, where M' differs from M" and the reagents and the products are water-soluble salts, comprising the steps of (a) transferring a solution of M"Y through at least one column containing cation exchanger beads loaded with M' cations, obtained in step (b) hereinafter, whereby cation exchange takes place to form a solution of M'Y and cation exchanger beads loaded with M", and (b) transferring a solution of M'X through said column containing cation exchanger beads loaded with M" obtained in step (a) above, whereby cation exchange takes place to form a solution of M"X and cation exchanger beads loaded with M'; characterized in that both M' and M" are selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium and ammonium; X and Y are different anions; two types of cation exchanger, A and B, are used in the process; cation exchanger A is more acidic than cation exchanger B; in step (a), the solution of M"Y is first transferred through beads of cation exchanger A and then through beads of cation exchanger B, both of which are loaded with M' cations obtained in step (b), whereby cation exchange takes place on both cation exchangers to form a solution of M'Y and to form cation exchanger beads loaded with M"; and in step (b), the solution of M'X is first transferred through beads of cation exchanger B and then through beads of cation exchanger A, both of which are loaded with M" cations obtained in step (a), whereby cation exchange takes place on both cation exchangers to form a solution of M"X and to form cation exchanger beads loaded with M'.

    • The invention provides a process for the recovery of a water-soluble carboxylic or mineral acid having a pKa higher than 2 from an aqueous feed solution containing the acid or a salt thereof, comprising extracting the acid with a water-immiscible extractant composition, the composition comprising: (a) at least one secondary or tertiary alkyl amine, in which the aggregate number of carbon atoms is at least 20, as a primary extractant; and (b) a sterically hindered, polar, organic compound having at least 5 carbon atoms, a basicity weaker than that of the primary extractant, and temperature-sensitive, extraction-modifying properties; separating the acid containing the extractant and subjecting it to a stripping operation at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C higher than the temperature at which the extraction is carried out, wherein the sterically hindered, polar, organic compound both modifies the extracting power of the primary extractant composition and facilitates the temperature-sensitive stripping operation. The invention also provides an extractant composition for use in such a process.

    • A synthetic nuclease resistant antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (AS-ODN) capable of selectively modulating human acetylcholinesterase (AChE) production and a pharmaceutical or medical composition comprising at least one AD-ODN as an active ingredient. The synthetic nuclease resistant AS-ODNs are capable of selectively modulating human AChE production in the central nervous system or capable of selectively reducing human AChE deposition in the neuromuscular junction. The present invention also provides a method to restore balanced cholinergic signaling in the brain and spinal cord or reduce AChE in the neuromuscular junction in patients in need of such treatment comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of at least one of the synthetic nuclease resistant AS-ODN capable of selectively modulating human AChE production.
