    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soluble LDL receptor which is isolated from interferon-treated cells or by a recombinant DNA method and which is capable of protecting mammalian cells from viral infection, another soluble low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor, production methods therefor and to obtain pharmaceutical compositions comprising the same. SOLUTION: This soluble LDL receptor is produced by treating a human WISH cell with interferon and purifying it through a variety of chromatographic methods (including an affinity chromatography using an monoclonal antibody C7). A soluble LDL receptor comprising a DNA molecule encoding a soluble LDL receptor having an amino acid sequence practically corresponding to amino acid residue 4 to 292 of a mature LDL receptor is produced by culturing a cell line transformed by an expression vector. The soluble LDL receptor, muteins thereof, fused proteins, salts thereof, functional derivatives and active fractions thereof are used as active components of pharmaceutical compositions for protecting mammals from viral infection.
