    • A computer system with a number of subsystems or modules on separate circuit boards employs electronic keying to ensure proper configuration of these boards. A power key arrangement associated with a plug-in connector enables a separate power supply for each set of boards. A power supply turn-on signal is routed through a uniquely-configured connector path for each board, so the power supply turn-on is inhibited for improper configurations. The uniquely-configured connector path may use either a series or a parallel implementation. The series implementation employs a set of diodes connected for conduction in either of two directions, with the mating connector having its conductor paths connected to match the diode configuration; in this manner, the power supply enable signal can only flow through the series path if the proper board is plugged into a properly-coded slot, in which case the power supply to activate this board is activated through the series path including the diodes. The parallel implementation employs a given number of connector pins to establish the coding for each board, and each pin is either open-circuited or connected to ground; if this coding of the subsystem board is not the same as that of the slot into which it is plugged then the power supply activation signal will be shorted to ground by one or the other of the coded pins.

    • A computer system is disclosed having a bus capability determination mechanism. In a preferred embodiment, the computer system includes a backplane having sockets into which system and peripheral boards may be inserted. The sockets are coupled together by a backplane bus that includes a bus capability line. Each board preferably includes a voting circuit that, when enabled, limits the voltage on the capability signal line to no more than a predetermined voltage that is indicative of the capability of the board. The voltage on the capability signal line will thus be determined by the board having the lowest voltage limit. The clock source for the bus can then be set to the clock rate indicated by the voltage on the capability signal line. Zener devices are preferably used to carry out the voting operation, and may be disabled after the voting operation is complete.

    • The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for accelerating the performance of a multi-pass rendering operation. The method operates in a computer graphics system having an application program that interfaces through an application program interface (API) to a graphics pipeline, including a rendering pipeline and a frame buffer. The method includes the step of providing a visibility flag that is in communication with the application program to relay rendering information to the application program. The method clears the visibility flag upon sending new data to the rendering pipeline, and sets the visibility flag if data sent to the rendering pipeline from the application program is further communicated to the frame buffer for display. Thereafter, the method evaluates the visibility flag from within the application program after a first pass of a first segment of graphics data has been rendered by the rendering pipeline. If the visibility flag was not set during the first pass, then the application program inhibits the rendering of subsequent passes of the first segment of graphics data. If, however, the visibility flag was set during the first pass, then the application program will send subsequent passes of the graphics data to the rendering pipeline for processing and display.

    • A circuit is provided that can provide, in a single package, a circuit to monitor a sensing element which uses a variable resistor. The circuit (also known as a signal conditioning circuit) may contain resistor input terminals to which a reference set resistor and a resistive sensor can be attached. A reference voltage signal can be applied to both terminals. There are also a circuit for sensing the resulting current flowing through both the set resistor and the resistive sensor. The difference of the currents flowing through each element can then be monitored as being indicative of the difference in resistance between the set resistor and the resistive sensor. The current difference signal can be used to generate a voltage difference signal indicative of the difference in resistance between the set resistor and the resistive sensor. The signal conditioning circuit may be used to adjust the temperature of various devices.

    • A clock which is intended for use in soda fountains, restaurants, bars and other places of business as an advertising display, and which may be illuminated. The clock comprises a rectangular-shaped rigid frame, a translucent thin plastic panel constituting a clock face which is mounted in the frame and which extends across the area circumscribed by the frame, the thin panel being held in place by integral lugs which fit into slots in the frame, and a transparent plastic cover mounted on the frame in front of the clock face. In one embodiment the drive motor for the clock is mounted on the rear side of the plastic panel. In a second embodiment the drive motor, together with an illumination source for the translucent panel, are mounted in a housing which is supported on the rear side of the frame behind the thin plastic panel.
