    • An implantable infection shield and system for drug delivery in vascular tissue includes a relatively non-biodegradable porous linked fibrous biomaterial which controls and directs cell growth and angiogenesis from adjacent vascular tissue into the implant. Infection shield embodiments stimulate cell growth and angiogenesis from adjacent vascular tissue which effectively blocks passage of pathogenic microorganisms along percutaneously implanted objects. In embodiments for drug delivery, a reservoir of the same biomaterial may contain either (1) a cell culture system enclosed within a porous sealable interior chamber or (2) a biodegradable matrix in which one or more drugs are dispersed. After implantation of a reservoir of the first embodiment in an organism, cultured cells obtain food and oxygen via diffusion in tissue fluid through the porous walls of the interior chamber, while metabolic products, including drugs, diffuse away from the cell culture in an analogous manner. In a reservoir of the second embodiment, a biodegradable matrix substantially fills the pores (voids), and progressive dissolution of the matrix releases one or more drugs into surrounding tissue fluid. Reservoirs of either embodiment comprise a plurality of voids of a predetermined size effective for stimulating angiogenesis from the surrounding vascular tissue into at least a portion of the reservoir. The reservoir thus acts to couple a source of drugs to the circulatory system of the organism.

    • A fire pouch is provided for protecting flammable documents from both fire and water damage. The fire pouch includes a thin pliable water-type exterior container which houses a gelled water material to absorb thermal energy during the fire. The fire pouch further comprises a hydrated intumescent material layer which is secured to the exterior container, and both absorbs thermal energy and intumesce during a fire to produce a foam layer which provides substantially increased fire protection. The gelled water layer and the hydrated intumescent material layer form a relatively thin pliable rectangular-shaped blanket having a seam which divides the blanket into a base portion and a cover portion. The blanket unfolds by bending substantially along the seams to receive the flammable documents, and folds into its protective position such that the documents are sandwiched between the based portion and the covered portion to protect the docments during a fire.

    • This specification discloses a means for providing a barrier against the passage of fire through that portion of a wall aperture surrounding an electrical conduit, pipe, or the like. This is accomplished by placing a sleeve around that portion of the conduit passing through the wall, which sleeve is the central portion of an envelope which is anchored peripherally to the wall or to a more or less rigid material blocking the aperture through the wall and which sleeve connects to end portions of the envelope, each of which end portions extends to connect with the conduit on an opposite side of the wall. The annular region between the conduit and the surrounding envelope is filled with an intumescent gel. The boot is flexible and capable of some movement to compensate for thermal expansion, vibration or other forces during the life of the installation. In the event of heat and fire, the gel within the envelope intumesces, providing protection against passage of flames and gas through the annular region surrounding the conduit, which annular region is now occupied by a fire resistant mass formed by the solidification of the gel. The intumescible gel comprises sodium silicate solution, a filler, and a hardener.
