摘要： An automated cell staining apparatus comprises a translatable head and at least one mixing extension. The translatable head is positionable over a slide and has a lower surface. A portion of the lower surface is spaced apart from the slide by a first gap sufficiently small to allow a meniscus of liquid to form from liquid on the slide during translation of the slide. A mixing extension extends from the lower surface of the translatable head, defines a second gap smaller than the first gap between the mixing extension and the slide, and has a lateral dimension less than the width of the slide and sufficient to generate lateral movement in the liquid on the slide during translation of the head in a direction generally extending from the second gap to the first gap.

摘要： The present invention is directed to any process and/or composition that substantially reduces or prevents gradient hematoxylin staining of tissue samples. Without being bound by a theory of operation, one possible explanation for observed gradient staining results is the formation of a more reactive staining species produced as a result of a pH change that occurs during the staining process. For an automated system, one disclosed embodiment comprises dispensing a hematoxylin stain onto a tissue sample, and then dispensing a bluing composition to the tissue sample to form a combined hematoxylin stain-bluing composition. The hematoxylin stain-bluing composition is then mixed, such as by agitation, on the slide sufficiently to reduce or eliminate gradient staining. Other approaches also can be employed, either alone or in combination with thoroughly mixing the hematoxylin stain-bluing composition on the slide. For example, the method may comprise treating the sample with process solutions, such as wash solutions, having a pH at or about that of the hematoxylin stain, such as a pH of from about 1 to about 6, more typically from about 2 to about 3.

摘要： A method and composition are disclosed that are useful for processing biological samples. In one aspect, a biological sample such as a tissue section is treated using a histochemical technique and is contacted with a lipid compound during the process to enhance the definition of cellular and sub-cellular features that are observable in the sample when it is viewed microscopically. In other aspects, a coverslipping composition that includes a lipid compound and a method of coverslipping a sample using the coverslipping composition are disclosed.

Another embodiment of the invention is a coverslip that has the glue spayed on in stripes thereby forming intervening channels of glue so that channels of air communicate with the edge of the coverslip.

The selecting device contains a suctioning mechanism (72) for picking up a coverglass (68) from a stack of coverglasses (182). It also contains the ability to bend the coverglass (68) to assist in separating the coverglasses (68). The apparatus further contains a matched barrier to eliminate any coverglasses (68) that may stick to the selected coverglass (68). The selecting device also contains spring members (76) which aid in the dispensing of the coverglass (68). After the suctioning mechanism (72) releases the coverglass (68), the spring members (76) exert a force onto the coverglass (68) to insure that it is released from the selecting device and placed onto the slide (190). After placement of the coverglass (68) onto the slide (190), capillary action pushes air bubbles out from underneath the coverglass (68).
