    • The present invention relates to an antimicrobial cleansing composition and a method of cleaning or disinfecting a surface. The invention more particularly relates to an antimicrobial cleansing composition that provides antimicrobial efficacy in cleaning applications having relatively short contact times. An object of the present invention is to provide an antimicrobial cleansing composition that exhibits biocidal activity in relatively short contact times of 1 minute to 10 seconds. Another object of the present invention is to provide an antimicrobial cleansing composition which exhibits antimicrobial activity at very low concentration of silver compound. A further object of the present invention is to provide an antimicrobial cleansing composition which has consumer-acceptable aesthetic properties. A still further object of the present invention is to provide an antimicrobial composition that is highly efficacious against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We have determined that antibacterial activity in relatively short contact times against gram positive and gram negative microorganisms in a soap based cleansing composition having silver compound enhances considerably in presence of a further salt of carboxylic acid. It has been additionally found that the antibacterial activity is enhanced even at very low concentrations of silver compound.

    • The present invention relates to a material that absorbs volatile compounds, in particular sulphurous compounds. It is found that an absorbent of high surface area suitable for highly volatile compounds can be obtained by growing nanoparticles of a layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the surface of powder activated carbon (PAC). Disclosed is a composite adsorbent comprising nanoparticles of a layered double hydroxide (LDH) and a powder activated carbon (PAC) of the general formula [M 2+ 1-x M 3+ x (OH) 2 ] q+ (X n- ) q/n .yH 2 O, in which, M 2+ = Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , CO 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ or Zn 2+ ; M 3+ = Al 3+ or Fe 3+ ; x = [M 3+ ]/ [M 3+ + M 2+ ]; q = x n = 1 to 4; and, y = number of water molecules present on the LDH; X = anions selected from halides, sulphates, nitrates, carbonates or anionic moiety from organic sources wherein said composite is obtainable by a hydrothermal process comprising, in sequence, the steps of: (a) contacting, and mixing, powder activated carbon with a water soluble salt of M 2+ and a water soluble salt of M 3+ ; (b) adding an alkali to the dispersion of step (a); (c) aging the dispersion of step (b) by heating it to 80 to 100 °C; (d) separating, by any means, the aqueous phase of the dispersion from the dispersed phase; and (e) washing said dispersed phase with water to remove excess alkali, to get the composite adsorbent, wherein amount of nanoparticles of said layered double hydroxide (LDH) is 10 to 30% by weight and wherein particle size of said powder activated carbon is 50 μm to 500 μm.

    • The present invention relates to a carrier composition for volatile actives. In particular the carrier composition is useful for stabilisation and slow release of the volatile actives in personal care, hygiene or laundry compositions. The carrier composition for volatile actives comprises a hydrophobic layered double hydroxide of formula: M" 1-X M'" X (OH) 2 (A n -) x/n .mH 2 O wherein M" is a divalent cation selected from calcium, magnesium or zinc, M'" is a trivalent cation selected from aluminum or iron, A n - is an interlayer anion selected from carboxylate, hydroxide, halide, nitrate, sulphate, carbonate, phosphate, sulphonate or their mixtures having at least one anion attached to an alkyl group having carbon chain length of 8 to 18, and x has a value in the range from 0.1 to 0.5, n has a value in the range from 1 to 4, m has a value in the range from 1 to 10 and a volatile oil having an evaporation coefficient in the range from 1 to 60 wherein the ratio of interlayer anion to the volatile oil is in the range from 25:1 to 4:1 w/w.
