    • Detergent compositions comprising stable transparent, translucent or opaque hexagonal phase gels contain an anionic or cationic surfactant which is "secondary", i.e. its polar head group is either positioned non-terminally on a hydrophobic chain or carries two or more hydrophobic chains; optionally a further surfactant which is nonionic or non-"secondary"; a material (the "additive") capable of forcing the surfactant system into hexagonal phase; optionally builder, perfume, colouring or other adjuncts; and water. A solid such as abrasive or insoluble builder may be suspended in the gel. Preferred gels of the invention contain alkylbenzene sulphonate or dialkyl sulphosuccinate as the "secondary" surfactant and urea as the "additive". The compositions may be used inter alia for manual dishwashing.

    • A concentrated liquid detergent composition which can be liquid at or below ambient temperature comprises (i) at least 40 wt% and less than 92 wt% of a mixture of surfactants, at least 50 wt% of the surfactants present comprising:

      (a) a polyalkoxy nonionic surfactant conforming to the general formula

      RVEW
      wherein R is an aliphatic and/or araliphatic hydrocarbon moiety,

      V is a linking group,
      E is a polyethoxy and/or polypropoxy and
      W is a nonionic end group, the nonionic surfactant for the portion RE having a hydrophile-lipophile balance of at least 14.5 where E is polyethoxy and an equivalent hydrophile-lipophile balance where E is propoxy, and
      (b) an ionic surfactant having a non-terminal ionic head group with two or more hydrocarbon chains extending from the head group, each chain being no more than 10 carbon atoms in length and the chains having a total length of at least 8 carbon atoms;
      wherein the ratio of (a) to (b) lies within the range of from 1:9 to 9:1, and
      (ii) at most 60 wt% and more than 8 wt% water.

    • Novel antiperspirant actives are amphiphilic materials which form, upon contact with perspiration, a water-insoluble liquid crystal phase of greater than one-dimensional periodicity, e.g. a cubic (three-dimensional periodicity) or hexagonal (two-dimensional periodicity) liquid crystal structure. Examples of such actives include lipids, surfactants, emulsifiers, polymer amphiphilic complexes and block copolymer surfactants which form the required liquid crystal phase upon contact with sweat. Preferably, antiperspirant compositions comprising the novel active(s) are free of conventional antiperspirant actives, especially aluminium and/or zirconium salts.
