    • Simplified method and apparatus for connecting a liquid chromatograph, particularly of a high-performance type, directly to a mass spectrometer without using any complicated devices conventionally available, for the purpose of continuous and stable mass spectrometric measurement of a liquid sample, either liquid or solution, more commonly an effluent supplied directly from a column of the liquid chromatograph or an aliquot portion thereof extracted through a simple and ordinary splitter, or any other liquid samples prepared for the mass spectrometric analysis. Such a liquid sample is first sprayed into finely divided particles by a nebulizing means mainly consisting of a double-tubing capillary so that the sample is easily vaporized, and finally introduced into an ionizing portion of the mass spectrometer in continuous and stable manner.

    • A pyrolysis apparatus comprising a pyrolysis heater and a pyrolysis tube, wherein the pyrolysis heater is of the vertical type. A sample basket being is disposed in the central portion in the lengthwise direction of the pyrolysis heater. A sample pyrolysis position is disposed inside the tube. A sample basket holder is provided at the upper end portion of the pyrolysis tube. The holder is provided with a detachable device for holding a sample basket connecting rod which facilitates free dropping of the sample basket to the sample pyrolysis position and a slit means are provided right under the central heating portion inside the pyrolysis tube so that the sample basket does not drop any more therefrom.

    • A sample concentration device is provided in which a gaseous sample is concentrated by cooling a portion of a gas transfer line through which the sample is introduced into a detecting apparatus, such as a gas chromatograph or the like. The device is characterized by a cooling device for cooling a portion of the gas transfer line, which is housed in a constant temperature chamber, by spraying a coolant from a nozzle facing the portion of the gas transfer line, and by a gas flow device for creating a substantially dry gas flow through the nozzle to prevent the nozzle from becoming plugged with ice formed by freezing of moisture in the air inside the constant temperature chamber when the coolant spray is stopped. An outer jacket surrounding a portion of the gas transfer line which is subjected to cooling is also disclosed. Because the gas transfer line is locally cooled by spraying the coolant from the nozzle, the sample introduced from the sample injection port is condensed at the cooled portion, and further owing to the presence of the outer jacket, as a result, each component of the sample is shown by a single peak, as opposed to multiple peaks per component, when the components are detected by the detecting apparatus.
