    • An integrated circuit for use in a computer system having a host computer and at least one mass storage peripheral device has a controller circuit for the mass storage peripheral device for receiving information from the device and an interface circuit to interface the information from the device to the host computer via a bus mastering bus, such as a PCI bus, a 1394 bus, or the like, in the host computer. The integrated circuit is adapted to be located within the host computer and to interface to the peripheral device. The integrated circuit may include a portion of a read channel circuit, which is connected to receive information from the peripheral device. The integrated circuit may also contain other circuitry for the control and operation of the peripheral device, such as a digital signal processor, a buffer manager, a speed matching buffer, servo logic to control servo circuits to spin a motor of the peripheral device, or the like.

    • A mass storage peripheral device for use with a host computer has a rotating data medium with a motor arranged to rotate it. A sensor reads information from the medium, and a data preamplifier for amplifies the read information. An interface is connected between the mass storage peripheral device and the associated computer. The interface includes a data transmission path to conduct data signals from the data amplifier to a controller circuit for the peripheral device in the host computer. The mass storage peripheral device may also include a circuit path to receive motor control and drive signals from the host computer for operating the motor. The peripheral device may be adapted to receive motor control signals from a servo circuit, which is preferably located in the host computer and connected to the interface for operating the motor. A read channel circuit is connected to receive the amplified data signal, also may be located in the host computer.

    • A computer system has a host computer and a mass storage peripheral device. The peripheral device is of the type having a computer readable medium, a sensor for detecting information on the medium, and a data amplifier for amplifying the information detected on the medium to produce an amplified data signal. An interface is provided between the mass storage peripheral device and the host computer. The computer system electronics is located wherein at least a controller circuit for the mass storage peripheral device is located in the host computer for receiving the information detected on the medium. The peripheral device may be, for example, a disk drive assembly, a hard disk drive assembly, a CD-ROM disk drive assembly, a DVD disk drive assembly, a floppy disk drive assembly, a high capacity floppy disk drive assembly, a miniature storage device, or the like. The mass storage peripheral device may be of the type that has a motor for rotating the medium, in which case, the servo circuitry may be located on the peripheral device, split between the peripheral device and host computer, or preferably, entirely contained in the host computer.

    • An apparatus and associated method are described for use in a disk drive including a disk that that is supported for controlled rotation and for cooperating with a transducer arrangement for accessing the disk in performing a data operation. The disk includes an arrangement of servo track wedge segments for storing servo data such that a set of servo data is periodically available as the disk is rotated in relation to the transducer arrangement and the servo track wedges are separated by an arrangement of user data wedge segments for use in storing user data. Generally, a controller IC and a channel IC are provided. The servo data is transferred from the channel IC to the controller IC using one data protocol and user data is bidirectionally transferred between the channel IC and the controller IC using a different data protocol.

    • A high performance, low cost rotating disk data storage subsystem includes a head and disk assembly. A plurality of sectors in data tracks include a servo portion containing a prerecorded pattern of a plurality of repeating, time staggered, non-phase-coherent bursts, each burst having a predetermined integral fraction radial offset relative to the other bursts and having a constant frequency preamble field followed by a unique value field related to its burst spatial location. A head is positionable relative to the tracks in response to information derived from a servo portion, a programmed microcontroller supervisor for receives operational data storage and retrieval commands from a host system with which the subsystem is operationally associated and controls the position of the head during track seeking and following operations in response to servo information read by the head from each servo portion and further in response to the commands, an interface under the control of the microcontroller supervisor receives the commands and data blocks from the host system and for sending commands, status words and data blocks to the host system, a data sequencer and memory controller under the control of the microcontroller manages flow of data blocks to and from the disk via the head and stores the information read by the head means from said unique value fields for subsequent processing by the microcontroller.
