    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of a variable valve mechanism capable of inhibiting a combustion failure of fuel in a cylinder caused by an excessive valve overlap amount produced in an engine operation range where the valve overlap amount between an intake valve and an exhaust valve is reduced.SOLUTION: When the target valve overlap amount obtained based on a current engine rotational speed and a current engine load is a small value which is smaller than a determination value, a guard value used for guard processing to set an upper limit guard to the valve overlap amount is determined so as to be a value at further reduction side. Accordingly, the excessive valve overlap amount caused by overshoot can be lessened even if the overshoot of the valve overlap amount with respect to the guard value occurs during the transient operation of an internal combustion engine 1 in the engine operation range where the valve overlap amount is smaller than the determination value.
