摘要： An image reader is provided with a transparent member which is placed in an optical path from the surface of an original document bed on the side of a carriage to a condensing lens, whereby when the transparent member exists at a predetermined position, the condensing lens can be focused on a translucent original existing at a position above the position of a reflection original. When the transparent member is at a second predetermined position, the condensing lens can be focused on the reflection original. The condensing lens can be focused on more than one position simply by placing the transparent member in the optical path, so that the structure is simple and the manufacturing costs can be reduced.

摘要： There are provided an image reading apparatus and a focus adjusting method thereof in which focusing can be accurately conducted by a simple moving mechanism. A condenser lens and line sensor can be moved being integrated with each other. When output values obtained when a document on AF line is read by a line sensor are represented by LS1, LS2, LS3, . . . , and when a broken line graph is considered on which the horizontal axis represents a reading position in the horizontal scanning direction and the vertical axis represents an intensity of an output signal, it is judged that the larger the total distance LM1+LM2+ . . . of the broken lines is, the more accurately the image is in focus. A square root of the sum of the square of a distance between the adjacent reading positions and the square of a difference of intensities of the signals which have been read, is calculated, and it is judged that the larger the sum is, the more accurately the focus is adjusted.

摘要： A method and apparatus for discriminating and separating only specific cells in cell samples is provided. The cell separation operation includes inserting a needle-shaped body, on which a substance that selectively binds to a marker substance within each target cell has been immobilized, into each of the cell samples on a substrate, thereby causing the marker substance within each target cell in the cell samples to bind to the needle-shaped body through the substance that selectively binds to the marker substance, and then, putting up the needle-shaped body. The binding force between the needle-shaped body and each target cell when the marker substance within each target cell has bound to the needle-shaped body is made greater than an adhesion force of each of the cell samples to the substrate, so that only target cells each containing the marker substance are pulled up and separated from the substrate.

摘要： A principal object of the present invention is to provide low-cost techniques for readily detecting or quantifying dioxins using substances which are inexpensive and can be easily produced, and extracting dioxins using such substances. Dioxin binding peptides of the present invention are highly selective to dioxins, and are therefore capable of detecting or quantifying dioxins in test samples containing impurities. Dioxin binding peptides of the present invention are also capable of selectively extracting dioxins from impurity-containing test samples, and are therefore useful in simple pretreatment for quantifying and analyzing dioxins.
