    • A torque converter includes, in a case coupled to an output shaft of an engine, a torus formed from a pump, a turbine and a stator having a one-way clutch on the inside thereof, and a lock-up clutch. In addition, in this torque converter, a fluid from a pump is introduced from a space between a stator shaft (F2) and a turbine shaft (F1), and discharged from a space between a pump sleeve (23) and the stator shaft (F2) through a space where the lock-up clutch is disposed and the torus. Moreover, this torque converter further includes a seal member (80) which is disposed at a side that is closer to the engine than a spline engagement part (P2) of an inner race (52) and the stator shaft (F2), and seals a space between an inner peripheral face of the inner race (52) and an outer peripheral face of the stator shaft (F2).

    • Provided is a torque converter (1) which comprises: a casing (10) coupled to an output shaft of an engine; a torus (T) defined by a pump (20), a turbine (30) and a stator (40) each disposed within the casing (10); a multi-plate lockup clutch (60) adapted to directly couple the turbine (30) and the casing (10); and a lockup damper (70) adapted to absorb shock during engagement of the lockup clutch (60). The lockup clutch (60) and the lockup damper (70) are arranged within a space between the torus (T) and a surface of the casing (10) on the side of the engine, in an axially overlapping relation. The lockup clutch (60) is disposed on a radially inner side with respect to a widest region (T1) of the torus (T), and the lockup damper (70) is disposed on a radially outer side with respect to the widest region (T1). This makes it possible to engage the lockup clutch (60) with excellent response while suppressing shock, and shorten an overall length of an automatic transmission.

    • A torque converter is provided for transmitting torque from an engine output shaft to an input shaft of a transmission. A stator is disposed between the pump and the turbine for torque amplification.     • A torque converter includes at least two thrust bearings disposed on respective axially-opposite sides of a radially-inward portion of a stator. The stator includes a non-rotatable member, a rotatable member, and a one-way clutch. The rotatable member has a cylindrical portion having an inner peripheral surface interlocked with the one-way clutch, and an extension portion which extends from an approximately axially-central region of the cylindrical portion in a radially-outward direction relative to the cylindrical portion, and has an axial thickness less than that of the cylindrical portion. The thrust bearings are disposed to clamp the extension portion from respective axially-opposite sides of the extension portion at respective positions located radially outwardly relative to the cylindrical portion, so as to facilitate reduction in axial dimension of the torque converter.

    • There is provided a power coupling device comprising first and second coupling members, at least one of which is capable of rotating about a common axis and relative to each other. The first coupling member has a pocket, and the second coupling member has notches. The power coupling member also comprises first and second struts arranged at least partly in the pocket. Each of the first and second struts is urged to emerge from the pocket and capable of engaging with one of the notches. The first strut is capable of transmitting torque between the first and second coupling members only in a first direction, and the second strut is capable of transmitting torque between the first and second coupling members only in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction. The power coupling device further comprises first and second retainer plates arranged between the first and second coupling members capable of moving in a plane perpendicular to the common axis, for example, of rotating about the common axis, and independently from each other. The first retainer plate has a first hole which the first or second strut can pass through. The second retainer plates has a second hole which the first or second strut can pass through when the second hole is aligned with the first hole and the first or second strut. By moving the first and second retainer plates, this power coupling device can achieve the neutral state and the bidirectional lock state in addition to forward and reverse lock states.
