    • In a process for producing an acrylic or methacrylic ester by esterifying acrylic or methacrylic acid with a lower aliphatic alcohol having 1 to 3 carbon atoms in the presence of an acidic catalyst, the improvement which comprises(1) distilling the resulting esterification reaction mixture while feeding the acrylic or methacrylic ester into a distillation column from outside the system, thereby to yield as a distillate a mixture composed of the acrylic or methacrylic ester, water and the unreacted alcohol and being substantially free from acrylic or methacrylic acid, and (2) recycling the residue in the distillation column, from which the ester and water formed have been substantially removed, to the esterification reaction in such a proportion that the mole ratio of acrylic or methacrylic acid to the alcohol in the entire starting materials fed to the esterification reaction is kept at 1:0.5-1.0.

    • In a process for producing acrylic acid which comprises contacting with water an acrylic acid-containing reaction product gas which has been obtained by the catalytic vapor phase oxidation of an olefinic compound of a general formula, CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHX, wherein X represents at least one group selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.3 and CHO, with a molecular oxygen-containing gas thereby collecting the acrylic acid in the form of an aqueous solution, separating the acrylic acid from the aqueous solution, and refining the thus separated acrylic acid, the improvement comprising a step of subjecting the bottom liquor of a rectification tower for acrylic acid to a decomposition evaporation and a step of subjecting the evaporation residue having a composition of 1-25 wt % of acrylic acid, 9-49 wt % of acrylic acid dimer, wherein total amount of the acrylic acid and its dimer is in the range of 10-50 wt %, and correspondingly 90-50 wt % of other matters to an extraction with water to separate the acrylic acid, its dimer and hydroquinone by the extraction.

    • This invention is directed to a polymerization inhibitor and a polymerization inhibiting method which enables the continuous operation of a device for producing vinyl compounds over a long period of time and virtually eliminates corrosion. Further, the polymerization inhibitors according to the present invention are superior in polymerization inhibition when transferring and storing the vinyl compound products and in other cases. The polymerization inhibitor according to the present invention contains manganese dithiocarbamate or a thiuram compound as an effective component. The polymerization inhibiting method of this invention comprises individual or joint use of said inhibitors, or joint use of a copper salt, another manganese salt, or quinones in addition to said inhibitors. Further, the method may comprise jointly using copper dithiocarbamates in a manganese salt as polymerization inhibitors, or jointly using quinones in addition to the salts.
