    • A dual mode automatic injector having a dual mode safety device for preventing the release of the stressed spring assembly except when it is desired to operate the medicament injecting assembly by the stressed spring assembly. The dual mode safety device comprises a first part including a pin portion disposed in a safety position extending through a central aperture in the rear wall of the housing assembly of the injector in release preventing relation with the stressed spring assembly for removal therefrom in response to a relative rearward movement with respect to the rear wall so as to permit an actuating movement to release the stressed spring assembly. The first part includes an automatic removal portion fixed to the rearward end of the pin portion. The automatic removal portion is of a size greater than the pin portion but less than the rear wall so as to present a forwardly facing surface spaced rearwardly from the rear wall operable to be engaged by a holding member while a moving member is moved forwardly into engagement with the rear wall to provide both a relative rearward removal movement for the pin portion and an actuating movement for the stressed spring assembly. The dual mode safety device also includes a separate second part and a connection between the first and second parts for (1) enabling the second part to be connected with the first part while the pin portion of the latter is in its safety position in a manual mode position wherein the first part is in rearward motion transmitting relation to the second part and (2) enabling the second part to be removed from the manual position while the pin portion of the first part is retained in its safety position. The second part includes a cap portion of a size and shape to be conveniently manually grasped by a user and moved rearwardly with respect to the housing assembly in order to effect the removal of the pin portion from its safety position when the second part is in its manual mode position.

    • A plural dosage automatic injector comprising an elongated tubular housing assembly having side by side first and second medicament injecting assemblies each including a container, a hypodermic needle, a liquid medicament and a plunger within the forward end portion thereof and, first and second stressed spring assemblies in the rearward end portion thereof disposed in operative relation with said first and second medicament injecting assemblies for operating the latter. A manually operable safety device is provided which includes a first safety pin operable (1) when in a safety position with respect to the first spring stressed assembly to prevent actuation and release thereof and (2) when removed from its safety position to permit the actuation and release of the second stressed spring assembly. A mechanical motion transmitting mechanism is provided which is operable to transmit a movement occurring as a result of the actuation and release of the first stressed spring assembly into a secondary actuating movement operable to (1) effect a relative movement between the automatic safety pin and the second stressed spring assembly sufficient to remove the automatic safety pin from its safety position and (2) thereafter actuate and release second stressed spring assembly to operate the second medicament injecting assembly.

    • An autoinjector converted from an intramuscular to a subcutaneous mode of injection comprising a housing having a medicament cartridge assembly mounted within the housing means in a storage position for movement out of the storage position and a releasable stressed spring assembly for moving the medicament cartridge assembly means out of the storage position. The stressed spring assembly is operable in response to a manual actuating procedure which does not require compression of the subcutaneous tissue to effect an intramuscular mode of injection by moving the hypodermic needle of the cartridge assembly outwardly of the housing into the muscle tissue at the injection site of a user and a major portion of the liquid medicament of the cartridge assembly outwardly through the hypodermic needle into the muscle tissue of the user. An injection mode converting structure is secured in a subcutaneous mode position for converting the mode of injection effected by the stressed spring assembly from the intramuscular mode of injection to a subcutaneous mode of injection in which the needle cannot extend substantially beyond subcutaneous tissue at the injection site of the user and a major portion of the liquid medicament enters into the subcutaneous tissue.

    • An autoinjector particularly suited to be carried on the person of a user comprising a housing defining an exterior configuration of a size and shape approximately the same as that of a conventional fountain pen including a housing body assembly of elongated generally cylindrical configuration and a separate housing cap structure of elongated generally cylindrical configuration having an elongated clip thereon. The housing cap structure is detachably secured to the housing body assembly in open ended telescopic relation with an opposite end portion thereof preferably by a childproof connection. A medicament cartridge assembly is mounted in a storage position within a forward end of an interior chamber within the housing body assembly and a releasable stressed spring assembly is carried by the housing body assembly adjacent the rearward end thereof. The housing cap structure serves the dual purposes of (1) facilitating the securement of the housing cap structure and body assembly with the user's pocket and (2) alleviating the likelihood of an unwanted release of the releasable stressed spring assembly with a resultant unwanted movement of the hypodermic needle of the cartridge assembly and an unwanted movement of the liquid medicament of the cartridge assembly outwardly of the needle.
