    • A sealing device which can open or seal a gap between two spaces that are maintained at different pressures has two members provided with surfaces flanking the gap and a seal which is received in a recess provided in one of the surfaces and extending transversely of the gap. The seal has a first section constituting a diaphragm or a hose which is secured to the recessed member and a second section resembling a flap integral with but pivotable relative to the first section at that side of the first section which is nearer to the low-pressure space. The first section is deformable in response to admission of pressurized fluid against one of its sides whereby the other side moves the flap, or at least the free marginal portion of the flap, against the surface of the non-recessed member. Once the flap is moved to the sealing position, that side thereof which faces away from the gap is or can be exposed to the action of pressurized fluid in the high-pressure space so that the flap continues to sealingly engage the non-recessed member even if the application of fluid pressure against the one side of the first section of the seal is terminated.

    • An ionography imaging chamber for use in the cassette of an X-ray apparatus has a flat prismatic pressure vessel defining an interelectrode gap for compressed high Z gas and a dielectric charge-receiving sheet which is to be exposed to a pattern of X-rays. The pressure vessel fits into the compartment of a strongly deformation-resistant jacket having a centrally located sleeve consisting primarily of polyurethane foam, a thin tubular inner envelope which consists at least in part of convoluted fibrous material, and a thin tubular outer envelope which also consists at least in part of convoluted fibrous material. That envelope which takes up compressive stresses has a layer of carbon epoxy fibers. The other envelope takes up tensional stresses and contains Kevlar fibers. The pressure vessel has two flat tray-shaped main portions which consist of polyurethane foam. The main portions of the pressure vessel and/or the sleeve of the jacket may be strengthened by inserts consisting of metal or a synthetic plastic material with fibrous reinforcements embedded therein.

    • An arrangement for supplying unexposed X-ray films to a handling apparatus, such as a cassette unloading and loading apparatus, includes a channel member bounding a channel into which a receptacle unit including an inner receptacle member and an outer tubular casing member can be introduced. The casing member is shiftable relative to the receptacle member so as to respectively cover and uncover a withdrawing opening of the receptacle member in its closed and open relative position. At least one arresting device is provided which arrests the members in their closed position. The arresting device is released by a releasing device mounted on the channel member when the receptacle unit reaches its releasing position in the channel. Then, the casing member is retained in the releasing position, and the receptacle member continues its movement until it reaches its open position. During the extraction of the receptacle unit from the channel, the releasing device initially retains the casing member, so that the receptacle member reaches its closed position first, and only then is the extraction of the entire receptacle unit commenced. The arresting device includes a biased rocking element having a detaining projection engaging in a recess of the receptacle member. A biased operating pin of the releasing device acts through an aperture of the casing member on the rocking element.

    • A circumferentially complete seal is received in a circumferentially complete groove machined into a surface of a first member forming part of an ionography imaging chamber. The surface of the first member is separated from a surface of a second member of the imaging chamber by a clearance which occasionally connects the interelectrode gap of the imaging chamber with the atmosphere. The seal has an inflatable elastic inner section adjacent to the bottom of the groove and a reciprocable second section which resembles a plunger and is moved from the groove, across the clearance and into sealing engagement with the surface of the second member in response to inflation of the first section. The latter contains a strip-shaped connector which is bolted to the first member to deform a portion of the first section into sealing engagement with the surface at the bottom of the groove. The second section is also a tube which contains a reinforcing insert and has a sealing lip adjacent to the interelectrode gap and sealingly engaging the surface of the second member in response to inflation of the first section. The width of the second section exceeds the width of the clearance and the thickness of the second section is at least twice the width of the clearance. When the first section is deflated, the width of the seal is slightly less than the width of the groove.
