    • A capacitance-type encoder comprising a stator, a movable element, an excitation device and a signal processing device to obtain position data with low power-consumption. The stator has excitation-electrode sets electrically independent and displaced to have phase differences from each other to form a predetermined number of excitation-electrode groups. The movable element has connection electrodes having the same number as the excitation-electrode groups. The excitation device simultaneously applies a first pair of positive and negative pulse voltages respectively to two of the excitation-electrode sets having a phase difference of 180 degrees, and then simultaneously applies a second set of positive and negative pulse voltages respectively to the rest of the excitation-electrode sets. The signal processing device determines which one of four divided regions the movable element is positioned in based on a combination of detection signals when the first and second pairs of pulse voltages are applied respectively.

    • A film-like electrode member, used as a stationary member or a movable member of an electrostatic motor. The film-like electrode member is provided with an insulating substrate including a major surface and a back surface opposite to the major surface; a plurality of electrodes arranged along the major surface of the insulating substrate at predetermined intervals; a main section including at least a part of the plural electrodes and of the insulating substrate carrying the electrodes; a locally thick section integrally joined to the main section and having a thickness larger than the main section; and a conducting element formed on the thick section and connected to the plurality of electrodes. The thick section includes a protrusion element having insulating properties and locally protruding from the major surface of the insulating substrate; and the conducting element is formed continuously on the insulating substrate and the protrusion element. The major surface of the insulating substrate of a first film-like electrode member is disposed to be opposed to the back surface of the insulating substrate of a second film-like electrode member, and the thick section of the first film-like electrode member and the thick section of the second film-like electrode member is brought into abutment with each other.

The electrostatic motor includes a protuberance provided to project from at least one of the first major surface of the stationary member and the second major surface of the movable member, for ensuring a predetermined clearance between the first major surface and the second major surface. The electrostatic motor may include a plurality of stationary members and a plurality of movable members, assembled with each other in a manner as to alternately arrange the stationary members and the movable members. In this arrangement, the electrostatic motor may further include a back-side protuberance provided to project from at least one of the first back surface of each of the stationary members and the second back surface of each of the movable members, for ensuring a predetermined clearance between the first back surface and the second back surface.

    • An electrostatic motor includes a stator electrode member (1a) and a slider electrode member (1b). The stator electrode member (1a) and the slider electrode member (1b) are provided with drive electrode patterns (2), and the drive electrode patterns are covered by cover films (4). Surfaces of the stator electrode member (1a) and the slider electrode member (1b) contacting each other are provided with a plurality of minute projections (5). A clearance between the stator electrode member and the slider electrode member is maintained by the contact of the projections. The projections (5) may also be provided on only one of the stator electrode member (1a) and the slider electrode member (1b), with the other electrode member having a flat surface.

    • A method of manufacturing an electrostatic motor including a stationary member with electrodes disposed on an insulating substrate at regular intervals, a movable member with electrodes disposed on an insulating substrate at regular intervals, a first support member for fixedly supporting the stationary member, and a second support member for movably supporting the movable member. A plurality of electrodes are formed on one surface of an insulating substrate and, simultaneously therewith, a light interrupting mark is locally formed on the surface independently of the electrodes, to produce the stationary or movable member. A local region of the insulating substrate adjacent to the light interrupting mark is irradiated with a light, whereby removing the local region along an edge of the light interrupting mark without substantially damaging the light interrupting mark, to provide a mounting recess in the stationary or movable member. The stationary or movable member is mounted onto the corresponding first or second support member by using the mounting recess.

    • A capacitance-type encoder capable of obtaining position data of a movable element with low power-consumption. The capacitance-type encoder comprises a stator, a movable element arranged to confront the stator, an excitation device and a signal processing device.
