    • An informing apparatus informs an operator of procedures for adjusting control parameters used in a control apparatus that controls an electric power steering apparatus based on various control parameter data. The power steering apparatus is used for the steering wheel of a vehicle. A storage portion stores various data. The data includes evaluation data, steering state data, control parameter data of the power steering control apparatus, and adjusting procedure data. The evaluation data is related to steering of the steering wheel. The steering state data represents the steering state when the evaluation data is obtained. The steering state data is related to the evaluation data. The control parameter data is related to the steering state data, and the evaluation data, and is being used when the evaluation data is obtained. The adjusting procedure data is used for adjusting the control parameter data such that the evaluation data is resolved. The evaluation data and the steering state data are inputted through a selector. A controller of the informing apparatus reads the adjusting procedure data of the control parameter data from the storage portion based on the evaluation data and the steering state data. The adjusting procedure data of the read control parameter data is outputted to a display.

    • A first system and a second system include a first motor and a second motor for driving a steering mechanism in dependence on the rotational manipulation of a steering wheel. A first ECU and a second ECU mutually monitor abnormalities of the systems each to stop an abnormal system. When the respective systems are normal, the first ECU and the second ECU drivingly control the first motor and the second motor of their own systems to drive the steering mechanism by cooperation of the respective motors. When either one of the both systems is abnormal, the ECU of the other system solely drivingly controls the motor of its own system thereby to drive the steering mechanism. Thus, it can be realized to make the systems low in cost irrespective of the provision of the plural systems.

    • An apparatus which can accurately detect a state in a passenger compartment is provided. On the ceiling of a passenger compartment above the passenger seat, nine LEDs and three photodetectors are aimed downward, and infrared rays emitted from the LEDs are reflected by an object to be sensed and the reflected light beams are received by the photodetectors. A signal at a level corresponding to the distance to the object to be sensed is outputted from the photodetectors. A controller obtains a change with time in output of the photodetectors (i.e., motion speed from a differential value of the sensed distance, a displacement amount total from an integral value of the sensed distance, and a motion frequency), senses movement of the object to be sensed based thereon, determines whether the object to be sensed is a human, an animal, or other, and determines the kind of object. The controller then transmits a signal indicative of a result of the determination of the object to be sensed which is used to control how the vehicle's air bag is inflated.

    • An internal combustion engine has an exhaust system and an oxygen sensor fitted to the exhaust system including a sensor element and an electrically powered heater for heating the sensor element. A method for controlling the electrical power supplied to the heater properly and quickly heats up the sensor element after engine starting from the cold condition. At the time of starting up the engine it is determined whether or not the temperature of the engine is less than a certain value. If so, the heater is provided with electrical power to the maximum practicable amount, for a certain time interval after the engine is started up. Thereby, during engine heating up operation, the temperature of the sensor element is brought up to its minimum proper operating temperature as quickly as practicable, and accordingly it is ensured that engine performance and the quality of exhaust gas emissions at the time of such engine warming up operation are good. A system is also described for implementing this method.
