    • A still picture video signal processing unit 30 and a head unit 40 records video signals of a still picture imaged by a camera unit 10 and PCM audio signals from terminal 2 in a PCM audio area of a magnetic tape 1 as digital signals. A controlling unit 50 controls the still picture video signal processing unit 30 so that an ID for discriminating interchangeability or non-interchangeability of the digital signals may be stored in a predetermined area. During playback, the controlling unit 50 controls the processing unit 30 or the like so that the video signals, the PCM audio signals or the like may be reproduced based on the ID. The user may be informed as to if the recorded digital signals belong to the basic function having interchangeability or to the extension function not having interchangeability and as to the reason playback cannot be made. The producer may be free to add a unique function to make distinction from products of other producers as well as to develop products attractive to customers.

    • By reducing the number of seek operations in an operation to play back a signal from a recording medium, the amount of data temporarily stored in a read buffer memory employed in a signal recording/playback apparatus is large enough to be output as a playback signal during a seek operation, allowing a continuous playback operation to be carried out. In order to reduce the number of seek operations, a signal is always recorded onto the recording medium in continuous free areas each having a size equal to or larger than a predetermined recording/playback time length which is typically set at 1 minute. If it is necessary to insert an additional signal having a length smaller than the predetermined recording/playback time length into a point of insertion in an area already occupied by an existing signal, a continuous free area with a size equal to or larger than the predetermined recording/playback time length is newly allocated to the additional signal. The additional signal is then recorded in the free area instead of being inserted into the point of insertion. Since the free area is larger in size than the length of the additional signal, the rest of the free area is filled up with a portion of the existing signal adjacent to the point of insertion.

    • A display device has a line scan driving circuit disposed in a horizontal direction of a display region and a pixel driving circuit (dot scan driving circuit) disposed in a vertical direction of the display for performing image display with pixel groups each forming one line in the vertical direction being scanned in the horizontal direction. Vertical-horizontal converting circuitry is provided for converting an image data stream supplied with n pixels in a horizontal direction and m horizontal lines in a vertical scanning direction into an image data stream with m pixels in a vertical direction and n vertical lines in a horizontal scanning direction, and the vertical-horizontal converted data is supplied to the display device by a display controlling circuit. That is, image data is supplied to the displaying device as a vertical-horizontal converted data stream and display operation is executed by vertical pixel rows being scanned in the horizontal direction, as a result of which the relatively small line scan driving circuit is disposed above or below the display region instead of the relatively large dot scan driving circuit and thus the area required for circuit mounting above/below the display region is reduced and the size of the display device in the vertical direction can be effectively reduced.
