The aqueous film-forming composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The aqueous composition provides a coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the compositions particularly useful as automotive clear coats.

摘要： Waterborne coating compositions are provided comprising a polymeric film-forming resin, a non-gelled copolymer and up to about 2.1 percent by weight silica, based on the total weight of resin solids in the coating compositions. The non-gelled copolymer is prepared from about 75 to about 95 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer such as methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, styrene, and mixtures thereof; about 2 to about 12 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having one acid functional group; and about 2 to about 20 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated oligomeric monomer hating a number average molecular weight of about 1500 to about 4000 and which is derived from a hydroxyl functional acid having a predominantly hydrocarbon chain of from about 10 to 19 carbon atoms. Note that the percentages by weight are based upon the total solid weight of reactants used to prepare the copolymer. The coating compositions may be applied to a substrate alone or as a clear film-forming composition in a color-plus-clear composite coating.

摘要： A coated substrate is provided which includes an outer coating formed from a film-forming composition which includes a crosslinkable, non-gelled acrylic polymer and a crosslinking material capable of reacting with the acrylic polymer to form a crosslinked outer coating. The acrylic polymer is the reaction product of a polyoxyalkylene acrylate monomer comprising a terminal alkoxy group containing about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms and a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from the polyoxyalkylene acrylate monomer. A multi-component composite coating composition is also provided.

Additionally, a process for applying the multi-component composite coatings described above to a substrate and coated substrates are provided. A process for preparing the coating compositions also is provided. The multi-component composite coating compositions of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings capable of retaining scratch resistance after weathering.

摘要： The present invention provides an improved multi-layer composite of two or more polymeric layers at least one of which is formed from a thermosetting composition. The composite includes at least a first polymeric layer formed on a substrate and a second polymeric layer over the first polymeric layer, wherein in the absence of a boron-containing compound, the first and second polymeric layers have poor interlayer adhesion. The improvement resides in the inclusion of at least one boron-containing compound in one or both of the first and second polymeric layers in an amount sufficient to improve the interlayer adhesion between the first and second polymeric layers. Also provided is an improved curable coating composition used to form a multi-layer composite coating of two or more cured coating layers, at least one of which is formed from the thermosetting composition. Related methods and coated substrates are also provided.

摘要： The present invention is directed to curable film-forming compositions comprising: (a) a polymeric binder comprising a polyester having hydroxyl functional groups; and (b) a curing agent comprising a polyisocyanate having at least three isocyanate functional groups. In certain embodiments, after application to a substrate as a coating and after curing, the compositions demonstrate a Fisher microhardness of at least 120 at ambient temperatures of 15 to 25° C. and a softening point greater than or equal to 35° C. Additionally, in certain embodiments, after application to a substrate as a coating and after curing, the compositions demonstrate a 20° gloss recovery of at least 75% when subjected to the DRY ABRASION TEST METHOD.
