    • 999,961. Apparatus for making tea and like beverages. J. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd. Sept. 25, 1962 [Sept. 25, 1961], No. 34312/61. Heading A4D. [Also in Division B8] Dry tea-leaves or like particles are dispensed to a brewing compartment in beverage-making apparatus, e.g. that described in Specification 870,763, by a reciprocatable slide comprising one or more measuring chambers 18 whereby two or more different amounts of tea-leaves or like material can be dispensed to the said compartment as required. The slide comprises plates 10, 11 and a measuring chamber 18 mounted for movement between fixed plates 13, 14 by a connecting rod 16 and a geared electric motor energized to automatically produce one or more reciprocatory movements of the slide. The chamber 18, which is shown in an intermediate rest position I is charged from hopper 1 at position II and discharged to a brewing compartment through an opening 21 in the fixed plate 14 at position III. To vary the amount of tea used, several reciprocations of the slide may be made to charge the brewing compartment, or a slide can be used with several transversely disposed chambers of differing capacity and a selector plate may be provided to prevent one or more of the chambers from being filled or discharged. The dispensing device is insulated from the rest of the apparatus and to prevent access of steam to the chamber 18 it is either moved to position I after discharge of its contents or an additional shutter closes opening 21. The lower side of the slide is heated to prevent condensed steam from making it too wet to operate and cooling 'air is circulated to cool the dry tea leaf. The hopper 1 is counterbalanced by a spring 26 which, if the weight of the hopper falls below a predetermined limit, operates a switch 28 which can switch off the apparatus or actuate a warning device. To prevent the slide from jamming, plate 13 may have slight free vertical movement on bolts 30 or may be spring loaded towards the slide; also to prevent dry leaf from penetrating between plates 10 and 13 a scraper ring and washer may be inserted around opening 20. The scraper ring may be associated with a telescopic measuring chamber. Specifications 999,962 and 999,966 also are referred to.

[Also in Division F4] A water-heating device which can be used in an automatic tea-brewing or like hot beverage preparing apparatus as described in Specification 870,763, comprises a small fast-boiling boiler 8, a larger preheating tank 1, and a float 10, in a chamber 5 in the tank 1 which controls the supply of water to the boiler 8, so that the water level in the boiler 8 leaves a portion of a heating element 9 normally exposed, to ensure that when the water flows to the tea-brewing apparatus through a spout 22 it is definitely boiling as it passes over that portion of the element 9 and is discharged. The preheating tank 1 has a thermostatically controlled immersion heater 2 and is supplied with water through a pipe 3 controlled by an electro magnetic metering valve 4 which may be provided with an automatic constant flow regulator. The boiler 8 is supplied with water from the float chamber 5 which is filled from the tank over the edge 6 of the chamber 5. The tank has a perforated baffle 21 to prevent unheated water from the mains entering the float chamber 5. Specifications 999,961 and 999,966 also are referred to.

A totally enclosed electromagnetic carbonpile regulator comprises ballast resistors sealed in the same enclosure. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement similar to that described in Specification 775,541 in which can 1 contains the magnet system associated with a carbon pile 3 in tube 5 having an extension 8 of increased diameter which is sealed by a plate 13 bearing terminals 17. Ballast resistor(s) 11 for use with the winding(s) of the electromagnet may be wound on a ceramic former 12 inside extension 8, and contact a liner 9 which facilitates cooling. A duct 18, which may carry connectors, provides communication between enclosures 1 and 8. Cooling fins 10 are provided over tubes 5 and 8. In a modification, the ballast resistors are con tained in a separate enclosure which communicates by means of a duct with enclosure 5. The arrangement may be adapted to utilize a circu lating liquid coolant.

A temperature compensated electromagnet or field winding comprises a main winding s in series with a thermally insensitive ballast resistor l1, l2, and an auxiliary winding a connected in parallel with a part l2 of the resistor, and arranged so that its M.M.F. opposes that of the main winding, variations of temperature producing equal but opposite magneto-motive effects. The two windings are preferably both of copper but may have differential resistivities. Adjustment may be made by altering the tapping point on the ballast resistor. For A.C. supplies, each winding may be connected in circuit with a rectifier, but preferably a single full-wave rectifier is inserted between the resistor l1 and the junction of the tapping point and resistor l2. If desired, a negative coefficient resistor may be connected in series or parallel with either winding. Specification 775,541 is referred to.

    • Lubricating oils are produced by contacting a mixture of a lubricating oil fraction produced by catalytically cracking gas oil and a lubricating oil fraction from a paraffinic crude oil, with a selective solvent for aromatic compounds and separating the raffinate. The gas oil fraction and both lubricating oil fractions may boil in the range 650 DEG to 1100 DEG F. The gas oil, e.g. a petroleum oil, may be cracked at 800-1000 DEG F. and atmospheric to 25 p.s.i.g. pressure using a modified natural or synthetic clay or a gel, e.g. montmorillonite clays, silica-alumina and silica-magnesia. Selective solvents referred to are SO2, phenol, furfural and nitrobenzene; phenol may be employed with up to 10 per cent of water as a solvent modifier. The lubricating oils may be dewaxed separately or the mixture may be dewaxed before or after solvent extraction; solvent dewaxing, e.g. with propane or methyl ethyl ketone, may be used. The mixture of lubricating oils may consist of 10-60 per cent of the cracked oil. The finished oil may be clay-treated.

    • 999,966. Apparatus for making tea and like beverages. J. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd. Sept. 25, 1962 [Sept. 25, 1961], No. 34317/61. Heading A4D. Tea-making apparatus and the like having an intermittently rotated compartmental brewing rotor, e.g. as in Specification 870,763, incorporates time delay means for controlling a proceeding cycle while a new cycle is being automatically started, a cycle essentially including supplying tea and boiling water to the rotor, brewing the beverage, and discharging and dispensing it. The control arrangements are described in relation to apparatus having a hopper 1 and boiler 5, Fig. 1, for supplying selected quantities of tea and boiling water respectively to the compartments of a rotor 3, as in Specifications 999,961 and 999,962, a vessel 12 for receiving the brewed beverage, and valve means for releasing the Leverage into vessels 10, 11 alternately and thence into a metering or dispensing chamber 13 as in Specifications 999,963 and 999,964. The apparatus shown also includes a milk dispensing pipe 25 as in Specification 999,965, a tray 23 for spent leaves and pipes 24 and 7 respectively for supplying rinsing water to the rbtor compartments and water to a tank 6 for feeding the boiler. The various operations are performed in timed relationship under control of electromagnets M, switches S and contact-operating cams driven by synchronous electric motors included in an electric circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), which also includes means for controlling a flushing cycle to clean the whole apparatus and for starting up after the apparatus has been shut down. Provision is also made for preventing the dispensing of beverage which is cool or otherwise unsatisfactory and for protecting against unscheduled operation as a result of power failure or negligent setting. Pilot lights may be emcodied in the arrangement to indicate the condition of the apparatus in operation, in setting up and when testing.
