    • 1,115,029. Battery charging systems. J. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd. 2 May, 1966 [2 June, 1965], No. 23536/65. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] A battery-charging installation comprises an A.C. source such as an alternator 1 which supplies a battery 2 over a rectifier 4 and another load 3 over a separate rectifier 5, the alternator 1 being controlled by a field regulator 6, e.g. of the saturable reactor or transistor type, having a single control winding to which are applied, in parallel, three control voltages, the regulator responding solely to that one voltage which is the largest at the time. One control voltage is the battery voltage which is applied directly to the regulator 6 by way of leads 7; another is dependent upon the alternator output current and is applied to the regulator by way of a transformer 9 and a rectifier 12; the third control voltage is dependent upon the battery charging current, and is derived from a transformer 8 and a rectifier 11. A blocking diode 13 permits the battery to discharge into the load 3 but prevents the battery from being charged through the load rectifier 5. The arrangement is such that control at constant voltage is superseded, at a predetermined value of current, by constant current control, so that the alternator is protected against excessive output current and the battery against excessive charging current. Compounding to effect drooping generator and battery-charging characteristics may be introduced by the provision of a transistor, acting as a variable resistance in a voltage divider associated with the battery 2 (Figs. 2, 2a, not shown). The battery 2 and the load 3 may be supplied through a common rectifier, the current signal to the regulator being derived by way of a transformer/rectifier circuit connected across the A.C. windings, in the alternator output circuit, of a saturable choke whose control winding is arranged to carry the current supplied to the load 3 but not the battery-charging current. The source of A.C. may be the mains supply, in which case the regulator 6 is arranged to control an input from said supply.

    • 999,962. Apparatus for making tea and like beverages. J. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd. Sept. 25, 1962 [Sept. 25, 1961], No. 34313/61. Heading A4D. [Also in Division F4] A water-heating device which can be used in an automatic tea-brewing or like hot beverage preparing apparatus as described in Specification 870,763, comprises a small fast-boiling boiler 8, a larger preheating tank 1, and a float 10, in a chamber 5 in the tank 1 which controls the supply of water to the boiler 8, so that the water level in the boiler 8 leaves a portion of a heating element 9 normally exposed, to ensure that when the water flows to the tea-brewing apparatus through a spout 22 it is definitely boiling as it passes over that portion of the element 9 and is discharged. The preheating tank 1 has a thermostatically controlled immersion heater 2 and is supplied with water through a pipe 3 controlled by an electro magnetic metering valve 4 which may be provided with an automatic constant flow regulator. The boiler 8 is supplied with water from the float chamber 5 which is filled from the tank over the edge 6 of the chamber 5. The tank has a perforated baffle 21 to prevent unheated water from the mains entering the float chamber 5. Specifications 999,961 and 999,966 also are referred to.
