    • A slurry bubble column reactor (11) arranged in use to include a slurry phase (12) and above the slurry phase (12), a gas phase (15), the reactor (11) includes a downcomer (16) secured within it. The downcomer (16) comprises an elongate tube, the tube having a lower portion (18) and an upper portion (17). The lower portion (18) has a slurry outlet in the region of the bottom of the tube while the upper portion (17) has a slurry inlet arranged to allow slurry to enter the tube and a gas outlet (21) in the region of the top of the tube. The slurry inlet comprises a series of slots (22) in the wall of the upper portion. The uppermost part of the upper portion (17) extends above the surface of the slurry phase (12) in use and is open for fluid communication with the gas phase (15) above the slurry phase (12), thereby providing the gas outlet (21), and the slots (22) in the upper portion (17) are at a position below the surface of the slurry (12) in use.

    • A slurry bubble column reactor comprising: a slurry zone arranged to contain in use a volume of slurry comprising a liquid phase in which solid particles are suspended; a gas space above the slurry zone; gas supply apparatus (11) arranged to supply gas to the slurry zone; a gas outlet from the gas space; and a liquid outlet. The gas supply apparatus (11) comprises a gas supply pipe (13), gas manifolds (14) tubular distribution rings (20-24) and a set of gas nozzles (40). The nozzles (40) open downwards and are arranged in use to inject gas into the slurry zone of the reactor (11), thereby forming downwardly extending gas jets of length L in the slurry. The nozzles (40) are distributed generally evenly across the cross section of the reactor (11) and are arranged to direct their gas jets towards the bottom of the reactor (11), in order to dislodge settling catalyst particles.
