    • The level (14, 48) of a liquid (12, 46), in a spherical tank (10, 50), or in the annulus (40) between the inner skin (36) and the outer skin (38) of a double-skinned storage tank (34), is measured by detecting the position of a temperature transition along the length of a fibre optic cable (26), the cable (26) being protected in a stainless steel pipe (28) and forming a distributed temperature sensor (24). The vapour (16) phase of the liquid has an inherently lower temperature than the liquid (12) phase. The position of the temperature transition relates to a level of the liquid (12) in the tank (10, 34, 50). The invention can be used with the distributed temperature sensor (24) helically coiled within a thermowell (54) in a cryogenicstorage tank, and can be used with a heater (60) or cooler in a holding tank, and with a flow pipe (62), to create the temperature transition. Another embodiment has the distributed temperature sensor (24) disposed within a thermally conductive conduit (64) carrying flowing thermally conductive fluid (66) which is cooled, at different rate as the conduit (64) passes through liquid (12) or vapour (16 ) phase, a knee in the temperature/distance graph showing where the surface (14) is, and measurements with the fluid flowing in both directions being used to establish the true position of the surface (14).

    • A system and method of detecting a fluid leak (10) in a pipe (4), which method comprises providing a distributed temperature sensor system (6), which includes a sensing optical fibre (8) that extends in the general direction of the pipe (4) and in the vicinity of the pipe (4), the method being such that the distributed temperature sensor system (6) detects via the sensing optical fibre (8) temperature changes which are caused by a fluid leaking from a leak (10) in the pipe (4). A reagent (30) is placed in the vicinity of the pipe (4), and the reagent (30) reacts with the fluid leaking from the leak (10) in the pipe (4) to cause a temperature change that is detected by the distributed temperature sensor system (6).
