    • An apparatus and a method for setting terminal states through distance detection for the user in a mobile terminal are provided to reduce the inconvenience of changing the states of the mobile terminal through menu setting one by one by measuring the distance from the user and automatically reestablishing various states, such as bell/vibration mode, the volume of a bell sound, presence status, etc., according to a change in the measured distances. If the power of a mobile terminal is turned on, the mobile terminal searches for user distance identification devices(201). If a user distance identification device is detected, the mobile terminal registers the detected device(203). The mobile terminal measures the distance from the user distance identification device, and stores the measured distance in a memory(205). Then the mobile terminal sets its own states, such as bell/vibration mode, the volume of a bell sound, presence status, etc., based on the measured distance(207), and enters into sleep mode(209). After a preset time, the mobile terminal wakes from sleep mode, and measures the distance from the user distance identification device(211). The mobile terminal checks whether a change in the measured distances is larger than a threshold(213). In case the change is larger than the threshold, the mobile terminal reestablishes the associated states(215).
