    • A buffer management scheme for an ATM switch where the static and dynamic thresholds are applied appropriately at different levels to ensure efficient and fair usage of buffer memory. A novel dynamic threshold mechanism which, while ensuring fair sharing of memory, maximizes the overall memory utilization. An ATM switch using a dynamic queue threshold scheme, said ATM switch comprising K output port queues and a buffer of B cells sharing said K output port queues, wherein a common threshold is dynamically set for the K output port queues, the common threshold being changed to a new value from an old value when a new cell arrives at any of said K output queues, said new value being a maximum of a length of said any of said K output queues plus one and said old value when total queue length is less than a preset value times B and, said new value being a maximum of a said old value minus one and a statically set minimum buffer threshold when total queue length is greater than or equal to a preset value times B, wherein said preset value is greater than or equal to 0.

    • Embodiments herein include variants of β-hexosaminidase that are useful for hydrolyzing GM2 ganglioside, polynucleotides encoding the same, and related methods. In various embodiments, a variant β-hexosaminidase subunit is included wherein the variant β-hexosaminidase subunit forms a homodimer under physiological conditions and wherein the variant β-hexosaminidase subunit associates with GM2 activator protein to hydrolyze GM2 ganglioside. In some embodiments, an isolated or recombinant polynucleotide encoding such a variant β-hexosaminidase subunit is included. In some embodiments, a method of treating a subject exhibiting an abnormal cellular accumulation of GM2 ganglioside is included wherein the method includes administering a composition including a protein variant of β-hexosaminidase or a polynucleotide encoding the same.     • Disclosed is a cellular network handoff decision mechanism which comprising the steps of: determining a sampling interval using a carrier wavelength; determining a local averaging interval that is larger than the sampling interval; determining a handoff decision interval that is larger than the local averaging interval; selecting at least two base stations from a multitude of base stations having a pilot signal from a reference cellular network using a selection criterion; determining a received signal strength from the pilot signal strength for each of the selected base stations once during every sampling interval; calculating a local average signal strength value using each of the received signal strengths once during every local averaging interval; determining an assignment region in which the local average signal strength value lies using a hysteresis range; and calculating a handoff decision once during every handoff decision interval using a handoff calculation.
