    • In a first embodiment of a camshaft phaser, the rotor is split along an equatorial plane thereof, defining first and second rotor portions. A resilient seal is compressively disposed between the rotor portions to prevent leakage therebetween and to urge the rotor vanes against the cover plate and sprocket surfaces to prevent leakage around the vanes. Preferably, the seal includes radial seal elements to seal against the stator wall. Preferably, pressurized hydraulic fluid can enter between the first and second rotor portions and thereby assist the resilient seal in urging the rotor portions apart. In a second embodiment, the rotor is not split, and a resilient seal is provided on at least one axial face of the rotor vanes to seal the rotor vanes against the cover plate and sprocket surfaces.

    • An improved splined cam phaser includes four assemblies: a sprocket assembly, an inner hub assembly, a cover assembly, and a piston assembly. The joined assemblies provide phaser function at reduced manufacturing cost. The component parts of the assemblies are re-configured from analogous parts in the prior art cam phaser to permit much of the improved phaser to be manufactured inexpensively by powdered metal forming or by stamping or drawing from sheet metal, in contrast with the prior art phaser wherein all parts are formed expensively either by machining from forged blanks or by investment casting. These changes reduce not only the cost of manufacture but also reduce the weight and axial length of the phaser, an important customer acceptance criterion, and improve the speed of response. Further, the proportions of some parts are altered such that all radial and axial loads are borne by a single large bearing in place of two small sequential bearings in the prior art phaser, thus reducing variability in axial alignment of the component parts.

    • An improved immersible magnetically-coupled mixer has a plurality of rollable bearing assemblies readily cleanable by flushing in place and easily removable and replaceable without damage to either the mixer impeller or the bearings. The rollable bearings are resistant to corrosion, capable of running without lubrication, and have low propensity for batch contamination through wear. The rolling and fixed elements of the bearings are impervious to attack by the process materials being mixed, the rollable elements, preferably balls, can be formed of a hybrid ceramic such as silicon nitride, and the races can be formed of a nickel-beryllium or cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy. A mixer impeller having a central bore is rotatably mounted at the upper end of the bore on the rollable bearings on an adapter collar receivable over an end of a fixed impeller shaft attached to the inner wall of a vessel at the bottom of the mixing space, which shaft may be on existing mixer shaft, thus requiring no modification of the shaft to retrofit the impeller assembly. The impeller contains magnets and is couplable in driving relationship to an external magnetic mixer drive. The bearings are exposed to the liquid in the vessel during agitation, and the impeller provides a continual flow of liquid across the bearing balls and races and the adapter collar, preventing formation of stagnant areas of process materials within the mixer assembly and permitting cleaning of all mixer surfaces by flushing.

    • A target wheel/rotor pre-assembly for a camshaft phaser. A phaser rotor includes a central bore. A target wheel axial extension having a plurality of barbs is entered into the bore to fix the target wheel to the rotor, both axially and rotationally, prior to assembly of the rotor into a phaser stator during manufacture of the phaser. Simple gauge blocks or a fixture can be used to index the target wheel to the rotor such that all such rotor/wheel subassemblies are substantially identical, to a high degree of precision. Alternatively, the axial extension may be formed without barbs, the extension inserted into the rotor bore, and then the extension immobilized as by stamping of the barbs, tack welding, or the like. For another example, the axial extension may be formed as a separate intermediate barbed retainer that engages both the rotor bore and the target wheel.

    • An improved releasable and reusable self-sealing plug for mechanically sealing a bore. A cylindrical body is formed on its outer surface to retain radial sealing means such as an O-ring. An oversize annular cap at the outer end of the body limits ingress of the plug into a bore, and a pair of opposed, flexible limbs terminating in flanges beyond the inner end of the body are compressed radially during insertion of the plug and spring out at completion of insertion to grip the inner entrance to the bore, thus holding the O-ring and plug in the bore. Insertion may be accomplished manually without the aid of tools. The plug cannot be driven out by pressure on the bore, but is easily removed by recompression of the limbs and flanges and withdrawal of the plug by, for example, needle-nose pliers. The plug may be formed inexpensively and easily by injection molding of a suitable plastic polymer.
