    • A disk drive including a delay circuit to provide a delayed reset signal is disclosed. The disk drive includes a head to perform write and read operations to and from a disk and a disk controller that is coupled to the head to control the write and read operations performed by the head. The disk drive further includes: a power loss detection circuit to detect a power loss and to generate a reset signal in response to the power loss; a reset power line coupled to the disk controller and the power loss detection circuit to provide a non-delayed reset signal to the disk controller; and a delay circuit coupled to the reset power line wherein the delay circuit delays the reset signal to provide a delayed reset signal.

    • A disk drive is disclosed including a disk having a plurality of tracks, wherein each track comprises a plurality of embedded servo sectors. A head connected to a distal end of an actuator arm is rotated about a pivot by a voice coil motor (VCM) in order to actuate the head radially over the disk. The actuator arm is unloaded onto a ramp by seeking the head to a track near an outer diameter of the disk in response to the embedded servo sectors, switching to a velocity control mode to unload the actuator arm onto the ramp at a controlled unload velocity in response to a back electromotive force voltage generated by the VCM, and ramping a velocity command so that the velocity of the actuator arm when contacting the ramp is less than half the maximum unload velocity while traveling along the ramp.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a head, an actuator arm for actuating the head radially over the disk during a seek operation, and a voice coil motor (VCM) for rotating the actuator arm about a pivot, the VCM comprising a coil comprising a VCM resistance R. A back EMF voltage detector measures a back EMF voltage across the coil, and a current detector detects a current I flowing through the coil. An IR voltage detector, responsive to the current I detected by the current detector, detects an IR voltage proportional to the current I times the VCM resistance R. A voltage compensator substantially cancels the IR voltage from the measured back EMF voltage to generate a compensated back EMF voltage. A control voltage generator, responsive the compensated back EMF voltage, generates a control voltage applied to the coil to generate the current I flowing through the coil. A memory stores a first compensated back EMF voltage generated at a first time period of the seek operation. A comparator compares the first compensated back EMF voltage stored in the memory to a second compensated back EMF voltage generated at a second time period of the seek operation. A calibrator, responsive to the comparator, calibrates the IR voltage detector.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a head actuated radially over the disk, and a spindle motor for rotating the disk, the spindle motor comprising a plurality of windings and a rotor rotatable at a variable spin rate, wherein the rotor generates a back EMF (BEMF) voltage across the windings proportional to the spin rate of the rotor. A plurality of switching elements are coupled to the windings, and switch control logic generates switch control signals applied to the switching elements for commutating the spindle motor during normal operation and for generating an internal supply voltage from the BEMF during a spin down mode, the internal supply voltage for parking the head. A signal generator generates a periodic signal, the periodic signal for periodically grounding the windings during the spin down mode in order to boost the internal supply voltage, wherein grounding the windings applies a braking torque to the spindle motor. A plurality of current detectors is provided, wherein each current detector for measuring a current flowing through a respective one of the switching elements. A current limit circuit generates a control signal which prevents the periodic signal from grounding the windings if the current flowing through any one of the switching elements exceeds a predetermined threshold.
