    • Methods and apparatus for performing addressable fusing and/or heating of a substrate undergoing xerographic processing are disclosed. The apparatus includes a fuser having an array of addressable heating elements in radiative communication with a substrate through a fuser roll or fuser belt. The array of addressable heating elements is operated to selectively heat portions of the substrate to achieve a desired effect on the substrate, such as changing its surface finish, or fusing unfused toner to the substrate. In the case of toner fusing, the array is operated such that substantially only an area covered by the unfused toner is heated. This eliminates the need for blanket fusing, and generally provides for greater flexibility in xerographically processing substrates. Apparatus and methods for performing two-sided selective fusing and/or heating are also disclosed.

    • An air diffusing vacuum transport belt including a first perforated layer and a second non-perforated layer is provided for transporting image carrying substrates without vacuum belt induced image defects. The first perforated layer includes a top surface and a bottom surface, solid areas, and perforated hole areas interspersing the solid areas for directing pressurized airflow from the top surface through to the bottom surface. The air diffusing vacuum transport belt also includes a second non-perforated layer formed over the top surface of the first perforated layer and covering the solid areas and the perforated hole areas. The second non-perforated layer has an inner surface positioned over the top surface of the first perforated layer, and an outer surface for uniformly supporting substrates. The second non-perforated layer as such is porous to air for diffusing pressurized airflow from the outer surface thereof into the perforated hole areas of the first perforated layer, thereby enabling transporting of image carrying substrates without vacuum belt induced image defects.

    • A fusing system for use in a printing system is provided. In practice, a print media sheet having a size parameter value is transmitted to the fusing system along a first direction. Additionally, the print media sheet is provided with developer material prior to being delivered to the fusing system. The fusing system includes a fusing member positioned along a second direction for receiving the developed print media sheet. The second direction is substantially perpendicular to the first direction, and the fusing member is operated in accordance with a thermal profile that relates fusing temperature to the fusing member. The fusing system further includes a print media shifting control system for changing the position of the print media sheet relative to the fusing member in the second direction by a selected increment. The position changing of the print media sheet varies as a function of the size parameter value, and promotes uniformity in the thermal profile.
