    • A closed loop sensor that utilizes a piezoelectric structure. In one embodiment, drive/non-control electrodes apply drive voltages to the piezoelectric structure and drive/control electrodes apply drive/control voltages to the piezoelectric structure to cause drive mode displacement of the piezoelectric structure and cancel motion induced pickup mode and quadrature displacements of the piezoelectric structure. In another embodiment, pickup/control electrodes detect a pickup signal from the piezoelectric structure corresponding to the motion induced pickup mode and quadrature displacements and apply a control signal to the piezoelectric structure so as to cancel these displacements. In still another embodiment of the invention, an optical sensing device optically senses the motion induced pickup mode and quadrature displacements and control electrodes apply a control signal to the piezoelectric structure so as to cancel them.

    • A system for measuring the dynamic pressure distribution between rolls in a nip roll press comprises a roll adapted to rotatingly contact at least one other roll in a press nip, having one or more sensors thereon, for measuring the nip pressure at several locations along the roll length, wherein the measurements obtained by the sensors are transmitted to a computer and a display, to provide tabular, numerical and graphical representations of the pressure at one or more locations on the roll. Optionally a control system may be incorporated in the system for determining the pressure distribution along the roll and initiating corrective measures. The system of the instant invention can further measure temperature variations, if desired, as thermal sensors can be used on the sensing roll, or a computerized correlation scheme can relate sensor readings to temperature as well as pressure.

    • A roll sensing system for measuring the pressure distribution and nip width in a nip roll press. The sensing system comprises a strip having sensors thereon, the strip being placed in a nip press, for sensing the pressure at several locations therealong. At one end of the strip lies electronics associated with the sensors. The electronics communicate with an optional multiplexer and a bidirectional transmitter for signal transmission to an external signal conditioner and an external computer. The computer determines pressure values and nip width values at various locations along the strip, and communicates with a display which provides a visual, graphical and/or numerical data to the operator. Optionally, a control system can be in communication with the transmitter or the computer to initiate crown corrections in response to pressure or nip width readings.

    • A rotation rate sensor that includes a closed-ended tuning fork which has a drive end base, a pickup end base, and a pair of tines. Each of the tines has a drive end and a pickup end with the drive ends of the tines being joined to the drive end base and the pickup ends of the tines being joined to the pickup end base. The rotation rate sensor also includes a drive circuit for generating a drive signal and drive electrodes disposed on each of the tines for applying the drive signal to the tines. The drive signal causes drive mode vibration of the tines. The drive mode vibration changes orientation when the tuning fork is rotated and causes pickup mode vibration of the tines. The rotation rate sensor further includes pickup electrodes disposed on each of the tines for picking up a pickup signal corresponding to the pickup mode vibration of the tines and a pickup circuit which is responsive to the pickup signal for generating a rate signal corresponding to the rate of rotation of the tuning fork.

    • Devices for measuring a nip width between rolls of a press nip include one or more sensors adapted to be placed in the nip while the nip is stationary. The electrical resistance of each sensor corresponds to the size of the nip width, whereby a nip width or a nip width distribution may be determined by measuring the sensor resistance(s). Methods of measuring a nip width distribution include providing a plurality of force sensitive resistor sensors each of which respond to pressure applied thereto to provide a variable sensor resistance as a function of the amount of pressure and the area of the pressure exerted on the sensor.
