    • An air conditioning and heating unit for automotive vehicles includes a blower, an evaporator and a heat exchanger disposed in a synthetic resin housing providing with integral air discharge outlets for the headroom, footroom and center plane of a passenger compartment and for windshield defrosting. The evaporator and the heat exchanger are arranged relative to one another so that the paths of the hot air and of the cold air from the blower to inlet openings of the various air discharge outlets are the same and so that the path of the hot air from the evaporator to the inlet openings is 1.3 to 1.8 times longer than the path of the cold air from the evaporator to the air outlet ducts. The inlet openings of the air outlet ducts emanate from a common chamber in the housing.

    • A central control unit having an air-distribution control formed as a control knob that has a FLOOR LEVEL setting, a DEFROSTER setting, and a MID-LEVEL setting therebetween. A method includes the steps of: actuating with the control knob a first air flap disposed in a fresh-air duct; supplying air to at least one fresh-air nozzle in the mid-level area; controlling with the control knob a supplementary air flap disposed in a warm-air supplementary duct via the first air flap that is directly coupled to the supplementary air flap; supplying the fresh-air nozzle with air by the supplementary air flap; positioning the control knob such that in the MID-LEVEL setting the first air flap is in an open position for fresh-air admission and the supplementary air flap is in a closed position relative to a heater core; positioning the control knob such that in a setting between the MID-LEVEL and DEFROSTER or FLOOR LEVEL settings the first air flap is in the open position for fresh-air admission and the supplementary air flap is in the open position relative to the heater core; and positioning the control knob such that in the DEFROSTER setting or the FLOOR LEVEL setting the first air flap is in the closed position for fresh-air admission and the supplementary air flap is in the closed position relative to the heater core.

    • Improved air-conditioning of the rear-seat area of a motor vehicle is achieved substantially independently from the front-seat area in a heating or air-conditioning system having means for controlling the temperature of the supply air via a front-seat control unit by employing a front air flap with a cool air passage at the inlet of a heat exchanger. A front-seat air-mix chamber is connected with a rear-seat air-mix chamber having a rear-seat area duct, a rear-seat foot duct, and a rear-seat air-mix flap with a cool air passage therethrough to control the proportion of cool and warm air entering the ducts. Cool air is provided from the inlet side of a heat exchanger flowing through the cool air passage in the front air flap and the cool air passage in the rear-seat air-mix flap while warm air is provided from the outlet of the heat exchanger. The rear-seat air-mix flap is actuated either jointly with a front-seat air-mix flap in a front-seat air-mix chamber by a temperature-setting element on the front-seat control unit or by a separate rear-seat control unit.

    • In order to assure with simple controlling and rapid adaptation to different temperature conditions an energy-saving adjustment of the temperature of the interior of a motor vehicle, it is possible by means of a single temperature regulator �(T)! and through adjustment of the latter to adjust such regulator in a first regulating range, in particular in the range of 0 to 30% of the total regulating range, from a high refrigeration output to a lower refrigeration output independently of the driving motor of the motor vehicle, and to adjust in a final regulating range a useful heat source �(EH or DH)! from a lower output of heat to a high output of heat. According to a preferred exemplified embodiment, the first regulating range is separated from the final regulating range by an intermediate regulating range with air-side adjustment in a mixing space �(MR)! and/or water-side adjustment in a heat exchanger �(WT)!.
