    • An aqueous syrup for use in chewing gum, particularly pellet gum, comprises, on a dry basis, greater than about 98% polyols, of which i) about 50% to about 90% is sorbitol, ii) about 3% to about 30% is maltitol, iii) about 2% to about 20% are polyols, other than sorbitol and maltitol, with a degree of polymerization (DP) of 1 or 2, and iv) less than about 20% (and perhaps less than about 12%) are polyols with a DP of 3 or greater. The syrup is made with less than about 1.0% plasticizing agent, such as glycerin or propylene glycol. The syrup contains less than 5% water. The syrup can be made by evaporating a mixture of a sorbitol solution, a maltitol syrup and one or more polyols selected from the group consisting of mannitol, xylitol, lactitol, erythritol, hydrogenated isomaltulose, and combinations thereof. Methods of using the syrup to make chewing gum, and chewing gum products containing the syrup are also provided.

    • A dual composition hard coated chewing gum is provided, which exhibits improved long-term shelf stability under storage conditions involving constant exposure to the moisture contained in the atmosphere. The dual composition hard coated chewing gum is ideally suited for pellet chewing gum having pellet shapes which cannot be easily protected from atmospheric moisture by packaging. The dual composition hard coated chewing gum has a gum center which includes a gum base, a bulk portion and one or more flavoring agents. The dual composition hard coated chewing gum also has an outer coating which includes layers which contain from about 50 to about 100% of at least two different polyols preferably lactitol, maltitol, hydrogenated isomaltulose or erythritol. A method of preparing the dual composition hard coated chewing gum is also provided. Lactitol, maltitol or hydrogenated isomaltulose is preferably applied first, and the covered with an erythritol coating.

    • Chewing gum compositions and methods of preparation using carbohydrate syrup-plasticizer compositions to improve flexibility and shelf life characteristics are disclosed. The syrup comprises carbohydrate solids and water, with less than 30% of the solids having a degree of polymerization (DP) of 1 and more than 20% solids with a DP of 4 or greater. The ratio of carbohydrate solids to plasticizing agent in the composition is between 0.5:1 and 100:1 and the total water content of composition is less than 20%. The syrup-plasticizer composition is prepared by providing a carbohydrate syrup or combined syrups with the proper carbohydrate solids distribution, combining a plasticizer such as glycerine or propylene glycol and evaporating water from the combined syrup plasticizer composition. Chewing gum made using the evaporated syrup composition includes about 5% to about 75% gum base, about 5% to about 75% of a sweet bulking agent, about 5% to about 75% of the evaporated syrup composition and optional ingredients used in conventional chewing gums.

    • A portable cooler includes a urethane foam shell having a storage compartment and fan recess. An internal heat exchanger is mounted to a wall of the storage compartment and conducts heat out of the storage compartment by means of a thermally conductive block to an external heat exchanger mounted in the fan recess. An electric fan mounted in the fan recess blows outside air through fins of the external heat exchanger. A grill covers the fan recess. A solid state thermoelectric device is disposed between the external heat exchanger and the thermally conductive block. A control circuit includes a first thermistor which senses the temperature of the internal heat exchanger. A comparator having one input coupled to a temperature control reostat and another input coupled to the first thermistor controls a switch circuit which connects the terminals of the thermoelectric device and the terminals of the fan motor to a supply voltage conductor. A manual switch can be actuated to reverse the direction of current through the thermoelectric device, causing heating, rather than cooling, of the storage compartment. A protective circuit senses the temperature of a second thermistor located near the external heat exchanger and prevents the switch circuit from energizing the thermoelectric device and the fan motor if the external exchanger becomes overheated. An under-voltage indicator circuit causes a light emitting diode to be turned on if a proper polarity and level of battery voltage is applied to the supply voltage conductor, and causes the light emitting diode to blink if the battery voltage is less than a predetermined level.
