    • A method of rendering a three-dimensional building with window effects has been developed. The method comprising: reading a building facade texture for the three- dimensional building from a memory; identifying room boundaries or floor boundaries within the building facade texture based on window areas of the building facade texture; generating a window lighting layer for the building facade texture using the identified room boundaries or floor boundaries; generating a modified building facade texture having window effects by combining the window lighting layer with the building facade texture using a window transparency cutout layer, the modified building facade texture being configured such that the window lighting layer can be seen only through the window areas of the building facade texture; and rendering images of the three- dimensional building using the modified building facade texture. A system having a display, a memory, and a processor for performing the method has also been developed.

    • A navigational system includes a hybrid-dimensional visualization scheme with a multi-modal interaction flow to serve for digital mapping applications, such as in car infotainment systems and online map services. The hybrid-dimensional visualization uses an importance-driven or focus-and-context visualization approach to combine the display of different map elements, including 2D map, 2D building footprint, 3D map, weather visualization, realistic day-night lighting, and POI information, into a single map view. The combination of these elements is guided by intuitive user interactions using multiple modalities simultaneously, such that the map information is filtered to best respond to the user's request, and presented in a way that presents both the focus and the context in a map in an aesthetic manner. The system facilitates several use cases that are common to the users, including destination preview, destination search, and virtual map exploration.

    • A method for rendering shadows in a 3D virtual environment includes generating a depth rasterization map corresponding to a plurality of objects in a three-dimensional virtual environment and a shadow interval map with reference to the depth map and a predetermined path of a light source in the environment that casts light onto at least one object in the plurality of objects that generates a shadow in the three-dimensional virtual environment with a server computing device. The method includes transmitting the shadow interval map from the server to a client and generating, with a processor in the client, a graphical depiction of the virtual environment including at least one shadow generated with reference to the shadow interval map, the at least one shadow corresponding to the light source and the plurality of objects in the virtual environment.
