    • PURPOSE:To improve abrasion resistance and scuffing resistance by forming a hard layer by means of nitriding on a sliding face on the outer periphery of a base material formed with each specific wt.% of carbon, chrome, molybdenum, vanadium, and tungsten and the remaining portion of iron. CONSTITUTION:After forming an approx. 100-mum nitriding layer by giving gas nitriding to the surface of a piston ring made of a base material of a chemical composition formed with a 0.70-1.10wt.% carbon, a 3.0-6.0wt.% chrome, a 4.0-6.0wt.% molybdenum, a 1.0-2.5wt.% vanadium, and a 5.0-8.0wt.% tungsten and the remaining portion substantially of iron, approx. 30-mum nitriding layer is removed by polishing to remove a compound layer on the surface. Thereby, scuffing resistance can be improved without impairing abrasion resistance, to improve durability.

    • PURPOSE:To make improvements in scuff resistance and durability without damaging abrasion resistance by using base metals of a chemical composition consisting of each specified range of wt.% in carbon, chromium and cobalt, a specified range of wt.% in either of molybdenum and vanadium or both, and substantially iron in the rest. CONSTITUTION:On the basis of steel types of a chemical composition of 0.6-1.0wt.%of carbon, 15-23wt.% of chromium, and 0.1-3.1wt.% in either of molybdenum and vanadium or both proven in abrasion resistance for a piston ring subjected to nitriding, such one that added cobalt as much as 2.0-10.0wt.% as an alloying element to improve the extent of scuff resistance. Then, a hard layer by the nitriding is installed in at least a peripheral sliding surface of this base material. With this constitution, improvements in the scuff resistance and durability are well promotable without damaging any abrasion resistance.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of seizure which is apt to occur during running-in at the initial stage of running, by a method wherein a nitride layer is formed at least on the outer peripheral slide surface of a piston ring, and a composite dispersion plated layer is formed in a depth of 0.5-20 m on a nitride layer surface. CONSTITUTION:A piston ring 1 is formed by a chrome steel consisting of, for example, 0.16-1.3 % C, 12-19% Cr, a small amount of Mo and/or V, and e nitriding treatment layer 3 having excellent resistance to wear is formed in a depth of approximate 0.05 mm at least on an outer peripheral slide surface 2, and e very thin composite dispersion plated layer 4 with a thickness of 0.5-20 mum is formed on the surface of the nitriding treatment layer. The composite dispersion plated layer 4 is formed such that a metallic sulfide, e.g. tungsten disulfide, molybdenum disulfide, boron nitride or solid lubricating particle, e.g. carbon, are dispersed in a metal plated substrate, iron or Ni, and has excellent resistance to wear and especially excellent resistance to baking. This constitution prevents the occurrence of seizure which is apt to occur during running-in at the initial stage of running, and enables provision of an increased life.
