    • A color TV receiver subject to reception of SECAM signals incorporates dual-mode identification system for identifying and correcting an incorrect mode of line-by-line switching in SECAM demodulation apparatus. In one (horizontal) mode of operation, identification information is derived from lead-in bursts preceding image signals during active line intervals; in another (vertical) mode of operation, identification information is derived from identification oscillations present during selected line periods within vertical blanking interval. A single FM detector (15) and pair of of sample-and-hold circuits (22,24) responsive to the output of the detector (15) are used in both modes of operation, with mode selection sensitive control signal generators (30) developing detector center frequency tuning control (C r ), detector gain control (G G ), and sampling control (C s ) waves of forms dependent on the mode selected. A mode selection signal (MS), to which control signal generators respond, comprises vertical blanking waveform with DC component of one magnitude (Fig. 3a, (a)) when the vertical identification mode is desired, and DC component of a different magnitude (Fig.3a, (b)) when the horizontal identification mode is desired.

    • In a dual-standard PAL/SECAM color TV reciever, an identification system (15) provides a mode-switching output, permitting automatic switching (17) of the receiver between a PAL-reception mode of operation and a SECAM-reception operating mode, in dependence upon the PAL or SECAM nature of the transmission received. In the SECAM-reception mode, a PAL decoder (19) receives the chrominance component output of a SECAM-PAL transcoder (13); in the PAL-reception mode, the PAL decoder receives (via 21) chrominance signals which bypass the transcoder (13). To equalise the signal delays in the chrominance and luminance signal channels of the receiver in the two operating modes, the luminance channels includes a switchable luminance signal delay line (33) in cascade with a chrominance component trap circuit (60, 80). The switchable delay line (33) is controlled by the mode-switching output of the identification system (15) such that delay line (33) is interposed in luminance signal path only during SECAM-reception mode operation. The delay magnitude provided by delay line substantially matches difference in delays suffered by chrominance information during operation in the respective modes. The trap circuit, (60, 80) providing luminance delay substantially compensating the delay suffered by chrominance information during operation in PAL-reception mode, includes resonant circuits (60, 80) tuned respectively to the two SECAM subcarrier resting frequencies.

    • In color TV receiver for SECAM-encoded signals, a single FM detector (15), subject to line-by-line switching of its center frequency tuning, achieves sequential demodulation of respective SECAM subcarriers. For the purpose of using an identification system of the type shown in U.S. Patent No. 4,240,102, center frequency tuning at the R-Y subcarrier resting frequency is held throughout R-Y line interval and during lead-in burst of B-Y line interval, terminating at beginning of image portion of B-Y line interval. Transient signal component, associated with switching to B-Y subcarrier resting frequency at beginning of that image portion, tends to be stretched into early segment of image portion by de-emphasis circuit (19) following FM detector. To reduce adverse effects of this on colouring of image at left edge, a differentiated version of a pulse (at terminal D) having an appropriately directed trailing edge coinciding with transient is delivered to de-emphasis circuit output terminal (0). Elements (61, 63) of the de-emphasis circuit preferably serve as differentiator.
