    • 1,224,815. Gas burners. RADIATION Ltd. 13 March, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 43957/68. Headings F4A and F4T. A gas burner comprises a casting 38, Fig. 19, having a recess 39 in which fits the burner ring, the body 38 forming a heat shield for the gas pipes leading to the burner. The gas flows through a main governor 60, Fig. 12, through pipe 60a to a main flow control valve 67 controlled by a flame failure phial 68, Fig. 11, and through pipe 60b to a Venturi-shaped mixing chamber 44 feeding the burner ring through opening (43), Fig. 17 (not shown). A slot (42) in the body 38 locates a pilot burner assembly comprising a ceramic body 48, Fig. 14, containing a standing pilot jet 50 and a heating pilot jet 51 for heating the phial 68. The pilot jet 50 is fed through pipe 59, Fig. 12, filter 57 and pipe 53 whilst the jet 51 is fed from filter 57 through a pilot governor 65, a manual cut-off valve 62 actuated by a slide 74, and pipe 54. The body 38 is supported by hooks 45 and a setscrew on a back panel of a water heater comprising an outer casing slidably supported on a back panel 5, Fig. 2, the sides of which are outturned at 33, Fig. 7, to slidably engage in guide surfaces 78, 79, on the casing. The surfaces 78, 79 are formed on longitudinal members 23 in slots 24 of which, Fig. 4, are mounted spring- loaded catches 25, the hooked ends 25b of which engage the top of the back panel 5 when the casing is slid into position, whereby the casing is resiliently supported and can be lifted to light the pilot burner. The water is heated in an annular chamber 9 with an inner wall 14 thermally insulated and provided with fins 13. The gas burner 18 is attached to a plate 7 supported from the back panel 5. The casing 1 is provided with perforations 21 through which downdraughts are diverted by a downdraught diverter 17.

    • 1,163,319. Valves. RADIATION Ltd. 29 Feb., 1968 [1 Dec., 1966], No. 53771/66. Heading F2V. A fluid flow control valve 1, comprises a central tubular member 12 which has formed therein ports 5 and 6 and a transverse partition 2 disposed between the ports, a heat-resistant plastics material sleeve 7 which surrounds the tubular member 12 and is adapted for purely rotational movement around it, the sleeve 7 being formed with flanges 9 which, through engagement with the tubular member 12, define a sealed annular chamber 8, and a sealing ring 13 whose plane is inclined to the valve longitudinal axis and which serves to split chamber 8 into two non-communicating chambers 8a and 8b. In the closed position of the valve, as shown, the sealing ring 13 prevents flow from taking place between ports 5 and 6, such flow being established, however, upon rotation of the sleeve through approximately 180 degrees whereupon both ports are located in chamber 8a. Sealing of the sleeve with respect to member 12 may be enhanced by the provision of a spring between each flange 9 and the sleeve (Fig. 2, not shown), and the sleeve itself may be strengthened by moulding a glass fibre tube (17, Fig. 2) into the sleeve, or by bonding to the sleeve a non-ferrous metal tube or heavy duty plastics tube (18, Figs. 2 and 6, not shown). The external surface of the sleeve may be formed with various types of hand grips (Figs. 3-5, not shown).
