    • A method and apparatus make a size measurement within an intervertebral space by placing an expandable and contractable device into the intervertebral space, expanding the device, measuring a size characteristic of the space, contracting the device and then removing it. Preferably, a holder is held by a physician with an obround-shaped device being inserted into the space and then turned by a steering mechanism prior to the device expansion. The device is small enough to be passed through an incision in the disc annulus prior to turning and after contraction. The measurement may be accomplished by an external x-ray or other imaging device imaging the expanded device in situ or by mechanically operated devices. An expansion and contraction mechanism such as fluid containing bladder or mechanically shifted members expands the device which later contracts in a controlled manner to the contracted size.

    • A device (100) for clamping cables or wires or other elongate members used in surgical fastening procedures includes a generally cylindrical housing (110) having a bore (112) for receiving a cable. A saddle member (140) is movably mounted with respect to the housing (110) and includes a saddle jaw (146) that may selectively be moved into engagement with a cable (10) disposed in the bore. A cam lever (160) having a cam surface (164) engages a cam support surface (122) on the housing (110) for actuating the saddle member (140) and thereby selectively clamping the cable (10). The saddle jaw (146) cooperates with a housing jaw (124) on the housing (110) for redirecting the cable (10) into an undulating path when the cam lever (160) is moved to a clamping position. The cam lever (160) is provided with multiple facets (164A and 164B) dimensioned to provide optimum clamping force to different sized cables. The facets (164A and 164B) also provide a positive tactile indication to a user that the cam lever (160) is in one of multiple clamping positions.
