    • When the injection device is applied to a patient's skin and a plunger (9) is pressed, the entire syringe and a carrier (23) move forwards in relation to a barrel (1) such that ribs (32) on the carrier (23) snap past a rib (21) on a shroud. The syringe is arrested by flanges (25) coming up against the rib (21), and a spring (35) is compressed and a needle (11) is fully projected. Further pressing on the plunger (9) ejects the dose. The needle shroud (14) is kept at the rearward position by its firm engagement around the injection area. On withdrawal of the device, the shroud (14) is pushed forwards by the spring (35) to protect the needle (11). This draws fingers (17 and 18) through gaps (20) in the ribs (21), the fingers (18) being forced to bend towards the fingers (17) as the divergence takes effect. Once the fingers (18) have passed the rib (21), they spring back to their natural straight condition to abut the rib (21) if any attempt is made to push the shroud (14) backwards again. At the same time barbs (19) on the endsof the fingers (17) re-engage the rear end of the syringe carrier (23), whose flanges (25) are up against the rib (21), thus thwarting any attempt that may be made to pull the needle shroud clear of the barrel. The shroud (14) is therefore trapped, the needle (11) safely within.

    • A cap (16) is provided for the type of injection device (1) which presents a needle assembly (11) to the exterior thereof for removal after use. The cap is of two part construction with a shell (17) of hard material, having opposite inwardly flexible tongues (19) defined by slots in the shell, and an over-mould (18) of relatively soft deformable material, extending over at least the tongues and the slots. The tongues are squeezable towards each other through the over-mould to grip the needle assembly when the cap is fitted after an injection, thus enabling the needle assembly to be removed with the cap so that the user does not come into contact with the used needle.

    • When a syringe has been used, it can be entered, needle tip first, down into a spigot (10) until the skirt of the needle assembly plugs firmly into the spigot, being held by ribs (12). The capsule can then be worked free and removed. Thereupon, a cover (14) is rotated in either direction and one of a pair of lugs (16) enters an adjacent slot (13) in the spigot (10). As the cover (14) is turned further, the lug (16) acts as a wedge and forces the needle assembly down. As the lug passes across the spigot (10), it finally presses the needle assembly clear, and that assembly drops into the main body of the container.

    • A skin pricker has an elongate housing (1) containing a spring-loaded lancet (5) which, when released from a rearward, cocked position by a trigger (9), shoots forward momentarily to project the tip of its needle (6) through one end of the housing (1). The lancet (5) is hen prevented by a spring ratchet (11, 16) from being returned again to the cocked position. The cocking can be done through a twist-and-pull cap (7) initially covering the needle tip and extending through that one end of the housing, the user pushing the cap (7) to retract the lancet (5) from its initial position. To guard against the lancet (5) being prematurely pulled forwards by the cap (7) and being trapped against cocking by the ratchet (11, 16), the lancet (5) has a formation (13) that will engage a part (10) of the trigger (9) should there be any significant forward movement from the initial position. When the lancet (5) is fired the part (10) is shifted to be non-obstructive to the formation (13).
