    • 7668. Olive, J., and Swarbrick, F. March 30. Switches.-A liquid electromotor starter is pro-. vided with a no-load release magnet for securing the insertion of the resistances, and with connexions so that, when the motor is stopped, it discharges through the resistance. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show the construction, and Fig. 6 is a diagram of the connexions. The casing A is divided into two compartments by the partition p, on one side of which is fitted the no-load magnet m and the switch s for controlling the shunt field, and on the other the tank t for the solution and oil. The moving contact or electrode c is connected by a cable g to a pulley, and is electrically connected to the spindle s. The pulley also serves to lift up the heavy armature m of the no-load magnet m. This armature normally raises the electrode c , and in its lowest position operates a switch s to open the field magnet circuit. When the handle h is turned, the armature m is raised, allowing the switch s to close the field circuit, and the contact c to drop to cut out the resistance. The armature when in the highest position entirely short-circuits the resistance through the contacts k , k and conductor g . The electrode c carries a plate d nearly fitting the cylindrical vessel c, aud this acts to prevent a too-rapid movement of the electrode. When the line switch is opened, the motor disoharges through the resistance until the armature has fallen and opened the switch s . According to the Provisional Specification, the armature m@ is provided with roller contacts engaging copper strips on the partition ; also, a locking-means is provided for preventing operation of the switch when the level of the electrolyte falls below a certain level.

    • 23,431. Swarbrick, F., and Aitken, W. Dec. 2. [Cognate Application, 7179115.] Contact printing-frames; printing-apparatus with bordering-masks.-The base f has a recess or recessed mask q holding the negative k with its upper face flush with the upper'surface of the base, and on the surrounding edges of the frame movable clamping-pieces are adjustably mounted for clamping loose mask pieces in position. In one construction, the sides of the frame consist of four loose pieces c, Figs. 1 and 2, overlapping at the corners and clamped at the corners by bolts t, so that masks m, m can be slipped in between the sides c and the face of the negative and clamped in position by the nuts t. The pressure back b is secured by the sides c. The sides of the frame may be fixed, and the under edges spaced from the frame, leaving room for additional pieces c, Fig. 3, to clamp the masks in position. Metal angle-pieces h may be used if the frame is of wood. Other alternative constructions for movable pieces are described. Masks formed by two L-shaped pieces m, m , Fig. 5, may be used, and their sides m , m dimensioned so that a rectangular opening is obtained. Alternatively, a rectangular block w may be used for this purpose. To obtain a determined width of border, an additional mask or piece v may be used for positioning the printing-paper. A projecting finger v keeps the paper steady. For circles and extensions of circles, a mask as shown in Fig. 6 is used, consisting of two U-shaped pieces with the limbs overlapping. To avoid a double thickness of mask at the printing edge, the limbs of one of the pieces are cut back.
