    • The present invention relates to a method enabling the freshness of vegetables to be easily maintained by increasing the germanium content of vegetables and is characterized by comprising the treatment of the surfaces and/or inner parts of vegetables with an organic or inorganic germanium compound by a suitable method. In this case, the organogermanium compound is, for example, carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide, and the inorganic germanium compound is, for example, germanium dioxide. It is possible to treat vegetables with an organic or inorganic compound in the state of an aqueous solution and the methods available include one in which vegetables are impregnated or are sprayed with the aqueous solution so that the germanium compound acts on the surfaces of the vegetables; and another in which the aqueous solution is absorbed by the roots of the vegetables so that the germanium compound acts on their inner parts.

    • The present invention provides (1) an agent for improving the reduced functions of organs caused by inhibited blood circulation, characterized by containing, as an effective component, an organogermanium compound represented by the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 to R.sub.3 are each a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group such as methyl, ethyl or the like which may be the same or different, or a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, and X is a hydroxyl group, an O-lower alkyl group, an amino group or O.sup.- Y.sup.+ (Y is a metal such as sodium, potassium or the like, or a basic group-containing compound such as lysozyme, basic amino acid or the like), and (2) a method for improving the reduced functions of organs caused by inhibited blood circulation, characterized by administering, in need of such treatment, an effective amount of an organogermanium compound represented by the above formula (I).

    • Organogermanium compounds having both hydrophilicity and lipophilicity are respresented by the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and A is a hydroxyl or amino group, a salt thereof, or an O-lower alkyl group. The compounds are produced by a process which comprises obtaining a trihalogermylcinnamic acid derivative of the formula ##STR2## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and B is a cyano, carboxyl, haloformyl, or carbamoyl group, or a group esterified with a lower alkyl group, directly or indirectly from a cinnamic acid derivative of the formula ##STR3## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and B are as defined above, and a trihalogermaneX.sub.3 GeH (III)and then hydrolyzing the derivative (IV).
