    • To automate the preparation of a replacement paper roll for flying roll changing, initial layer portions of web material from the replacement paper roll and which, typically, are damaged, are rolled on a scrap roll (2) to form scrap material windings thereon. In a first moving step, the scrap roll (2) is placed in engagement with the replacement paper roll to wind scrap material thereon. When a sensing element (22) senses that the paper is suitable for printing, the scrap roll is moved away from the replacement roll (1) and into a preparation or processing position (FIG. 11). At that processing position, two spaced axially extending perforation or tear lines (4, 5) are formed in the beginning portion. In a third moving step, the beginning portion is placed in engagement with the paper roll by moving the scrap roll back towards the replacement roll and, preferably, adhered thereto temporarily by a holding adhesive. In a fourth moving step, the paper on the scrap roll and on the replacement is severed along one (5) of the perforating lines, and the scrap roll is then moved away from the replacement roll for removal of scrap material thereon. Preferably, all elements other than the replacement paper roll are retained in a frame which can be moved towards and away from the replacement roll, and includes the elements, as well as drive and guide devices therefor.

    • A method for handling printing plates, namely for arranging printing plates in cassettes that are used as printing plate repositories during a printing plate change, is disclosed. Each printing plate is assigned a coding before, during or after imaging relating to a plate cylinder position of a printing couple at which the respective printing plate is used. Each imaged and coded printing plate is transported to the region of a cassette. In the region of each cassette, the coding of the printing plates is read out, and in doing so a check is made to see whether the printing plates are located at the correct cassette. If it is established that the printing plates are located at the correct cassette, a defined accommodation position in the cassette is released for each printing plate and the printing plate is positioned at this accommodation position within the cassette.

    • To prepare an initial portion (41) on a replacement roll (4) of a substrate web, for example a printing paper web, for flying pasting, the new roll (4) is rotatably supported in apredetermined position. An adhesive application and cutter structure (5) is then placed in operative association with the roll. An initial portion (41) of the web is rolled off from the new roll, positioned on the support plate, and, in one operating step, an end, which may be jagged, is cut off and, inwardly of the cut edge (42), a perforating or tear-off line (43) is formed, to leave, between the cut edge and the tear-off line, a tear-off section (44). The web can then be repositioned on the plate (6) and a connecting adhesive (19) is applied to the upper side of the web, for subsequent flying pasting against a moving expiring web, for example, as well as a holding adhesive, applied in the inside of the tear-off section (44), so that the end portion (41) is securely attached to the roll. Preferably, the cutter and perforating blades are located on a single support block; and the adhesive applicators, likewise, are retained on a common support structure, which may be coupled with the blade support structure, for conjoint movement across the web.

    • The chambered doctor blade unit is intended to ink an anilox roller (10) with ink having a viscosity of at least 1 d Pa s and preferably greater than 40 d Pa s. Each of the side walls (3) when the inker is in operative position with respect to the anilox roller (10) form circumferential gaps (13) with respect to the anilox roller, having a width (A) of between about 0.1 to 3 mm, thereby preventing wear and tear on the side walls and sealing of the receptors or cells of the anilox roller with a braided material. The doctor blades (4, 5) are resiliently pressed against upper (20) and lower edges of the side walls, to prevent formation of undulation, the side walls being formed with recessed surfaces (11) facing the anilox roller, with abraded surfaces terminate in inclined relief surfaces (19) forming an inclined gap, to permit escape of ink adjacent the lateral surfaces. To prevent uncontrolled escape of ink, an ink deflection shield (22) extends from the outside of the side walls towards an ink trough (9 ) and forming a run-out chamber with the relieved surfaces.
