    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir welding method which can suppress the deterioration of the strength of the welded portion formed by the friction stir welding, and further to provide a welded member.
      SOLUTION: In the friction stir welding method, a reinforcing material 4 is arranged at the abutted portion 2 of objects to be welded, and a welding tool 3 is inserted into the abutted portion of the materials to be welded, and is moved along the abutted portion while being turned. The reinforcing material is made of boron-, silicon carbide-, carbon- or alumina-based fiber or whisker. The whisker of the reinforcing material has a diameter of 0.02 to 1.5 μm, and a length of 3 to 200 μm. The fiber of the reinforcing material has a diameter of 1 to 250 μm. The welded member can be achieved by the friction stir welding method described above. The reinforcing material is uniformly distributed over the welded portion of the objects to be welded at a rate of 10 to 30 vol.%.
